I have a good mate who worked in Basel for many years. Initially he lived in a flat in Basel, but the rules and regulations were so draconian that he moved to France. He wasn't allowed to pee standing up after 8pm, or wash his car, use a mower or the washing machine on a Sunday. On one occasion he did use the washing machine on a Sunday and one of his neighbours called the police. If you're going to live in a flat, look carefully at any rules and regs first.

I did two years in Zürich, and my new gig is supposed to be partly based in Lausanne (damn COVID). It's a wonderful country and Brits, especially from the Tech/Science sector are in high demand - because of the open agreement signed post-Brexit. Good luck, but it's hellishly expensive, so negotiate up on any job offer.

Its a long way from where you are but both areas equally stunning in different ways.

I was in Lausanne, so a bit different to the German part. Some good tips above. Englishforum is a great resource. Make sure you get proper help with relocation - we had an agent to help us out with renting a flat and we'd have never managed otherwise. The market is very different.

Do go if you have the chance. It is expensive, but hopefully you'd have a package to allow for that. We were skiing pretty much every weekend, and it's well placed for travelling around Europe.

Ok I still love it but a bloody Fouine chewed my wife's car last night, 1500CHF in damage grrrr.

Thankfully my car and bike live in the garage ! I feel the carport turning into a garage will be our next project.

I’ve been living in the German side of Switzerland the past 9 years - can’t see myself living anywhere else at the moment! If you do move I can definitely recommend living in a lake town - this time of year it’s great going for a swim after work! Thalwil and Horgen are typically filled with expats and we’re down in Lachen which has a really nice marina and Old town. Any questions feel free to ask

In Germany you can get specific Marten insurance, they cause so much hassle!
