Hi guys, I am in the process of trying to find a company that could help me with the above. I am fully au fait with the normal process; alreading having 3 RHD cars registered over here, however I have just bought a little trackday toy (Mazda RX7) which has lots of non-approved (Ohne TuV ABE paperwork). I know it is possible to do but all the normal TUV/Dekra places do not have a clue. Anyone here have any ideas. I live around 40mins south of the Ring in Traben-Trarbach on the Moselle.

Hello Richie
Without any TüV or ABE you'll have serious problems: you might even have to get a single car inspection (einzel Fahrzeugabnahme) which could be enormously expensive or even impossible. There are specialist engineers who do this but they are known for their expensive prices. Sorry don't know any in your area. WHatever wish you good luck with getting it inspected and passed.

Many thanks for your help. The thing is I know/really hope it is possible; the video below shows a car very similar to mine, in term of the mods, which is donned with DE Kennzeichen.

what I'd do is to contact the advertisers on that car (which is registered in Saarlouis BTW) they might be able to help.
Trouble is every single TüV inspection joint seems to make up their own rules, and treat the same car differently. If you've no ABEs or TüV markings on your parts you're very unlikely to get approval. They're getting more strict especially since the EU wants to ban ALL non-manufacturers installed mods. You'll definitely need a friend or friendly TüV approved engineer to get anything like the shown car passed. Why don't you try the local car/motorsport clubs (NOT ADAC or such!), they might well know of such guys or even have a member who can help. Search t'internet for "Autosport club" in your area.

I was thinking of importing a Morris 1000 traveller (completely rebuilt) but gave up after I found out how obstructive the TüV can be! wanted an EU manufactureres approval certificate from a defunkt company who manufactured the car before the EU existed..... tossers!

Richie,

you might want to contact Sat Autosport. I've never done business with them, but a colleague of mine with a highly modified Honda Civic recommended them if I ever had any problems with my cars.

Cheers

Hello Richie,

Try Motorsport Knoop. I was recommended them for registering an Ultima, and I spoke to them last year about a Lotus 7 kit. Apparently they have registered quite a few UK kit cars and specialise in modified cars. They are also very close to you.

Apologies for dragging this old topic back up but I'm thinking of tackling the same process by importing a supercharged MX5 from the UK to Germany.

OP- did you manage to get the RX7 registered? Was it a difficult/costly process?

Hi Tombart, it is a lot easier now. Just go to RHDspeedmaster. They will sort you out no problem. Just ask for Chris Mueller and let him know I sent you. Cost will depend on level of modifications.

Hello all,
I moved to Germany not long ago and am thinking of some projects to start. Would it be at all possible to get a car with an engine swap through inspection, registered, and insured? Possibly with the help of the shops mentioned above? For example, a Smart with a motorcycle engine or BMW 1 series with a 5 series engine?

What about something more extreme like a self-built car, similar to Ariel Atom? I see ATV’s and UTV’s that are street legal so maybe there’s a similar approval process?

For the moment I’m content with a stock 135i, but I have an itch to start something new.

It is almost impossible, you need to know the rules, read between the lines, and find the few loopholes.

Everything that has ever been registered like an ATV is easy,

but once you go self-building it gets expensive.

You would need emission certificates, noise certificates and vehicle saftey certificates that -maybe- could be done,

but the tests might run into five-digit territory.

Proven Kit cars like caterfields/ Cobras are on the road and other kits are available :

http://www.kitcarlinks.com/euroclubs.htm

Maybe get into the Oldtimer / HotRod scene, with an old VIN and papers things are easier,

because a car from the 30s has to fulfill emission and sefatey rules of the 30s.

You can´t just stick an LS7 in a Model A because the mods have to be "contemporary".

Check and translate this, the Club members know their stuff :
