Can anybody recommend good place to make overnight stop about halfway on this trip.
It will be a Sunday in May so not sure if visit to cologne cathedral possible

Sorry to be curious - but do you need to stop half way - its only 500km - 6 hours driving with a rest break if you are lucky.
I've just had my first two week european driving holiday and those distances are much easier than the UK - and thats coming from a middle aged diabetic who needs regular 'comfort' breaks.
Admittedly my 1400km drive from Yorkshire to Stuttgart was a challenge - and I had been at work before setting off. But the return journey split into a 1000km segment back to Belgium for the ferry was breeze (24yo Merc).
If you want to visit Cologne check the web and see if it fits in.

Aachen is a nice little town with a beautiful cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage). I like it more than Cologne and its cathedral.
