Looking for a drive away awning or tent that I can use with my BMW X3, ie park the car and with the tailgate up have an awning or tent attached so that I can sleep in the car (with the seats down) and use the awning/ tent for storage and as the "living room".

Is this possible? It's not for holidays, but for when I'm racing. A camper van or motor home would be the ideal but can't have that and the X3 and go racing!! And I do like the C3 for everyday use.

Your plan sounds a little compromised. Sleeping in a car (or X3) is not ideal. I would just go for the most suitable tent/ air matress. A decent tent would be far less cumbersome and more comfortable than what you are proposing.

Have a look at the Kyham tailgate awning, Amdro do one for their conversion kit for Berlingos sized vehicles, also there's a Caranex. They all offer the same idea of a bit of extra space to change, cook or relax.

Let us know what you find....I always thought this was a pretty good idea - our XC60 is completely flat with seats down, makes sense to have a little tent out the back but I suspect it would be a little compromised - you'd not want to scratch the tailgate with anything, but you would need to have a decent seal.

Thanks, that very helpful. The Kyham one no,longer seems to be available, at least on Amazon, so difficult to find details but the Amdro and Caranex are worthy of further investigation. The latter does look a bit of a fiddle to put up; you'd think that they would be using air beam technology by now!

At least I know that these things exist now, cheers.

Would the Sunncamp Silhouette 225 Motor Plus fit the bill? Looks like it has a decent 'link corridor' to attach to the back of the X3 - a Navarra with hardtop featured in the pics here

Would prefer air beam technology rather than lots of poles to faff with!

Have found these with an air beam option.

Look like possibilities, and seem to have room to sleep on a cap bed in the awning rather than in back of car.

I've just got one of these for my van, https://www.funkyleisure.co.uk/vango-airbeam-galli...

Cannot wait to get it set up, I just need my van to come back from the conversion company.
