With that criteria you probably won't go far wrong with a Golf. Just test drive a couple of other cars first for comparison, perhaps:

Nicer to drive?
2012 Ford Focus 2.0 TDCi Titanium X Powershift

More comfort?
2014 Volvo V40 2.0 D3 SE Lux Geartronic

Or supreme levels of comfort? (if you're brave wink)
2008 Mercedes-Benz S Class 3.0 S320 CDI

Try the Volvo. I can't speak personally for the V40, but a friends C30 T5 is surprisingly comfortable for something sporty(ish). If they've carried this over into the V40 then it could be quite comfortable for doing high mileage.

(plus they have a good reputation for comfortable seats)

I'm not brave, I have a very old and rusty car that satisfies my motoring interest, so this just has to be the boring but dependable pack horse.
I suspect most cars are reliable enough, but something from the Far east would likely excel at being a boring, dependable pack horse. You won't likely be wowed by it when you go for a test drive, but they do tend to just keep going.

If you must go VW, or VAG, you may well be better off with a Skoda because they will likely offer more for you budget and mostly use the some components. I use mini cabs from time to time and the Toyotas are noticeably better at mega miles than VW's.

Current shape Astra/Octavia/Leon are all nicer to drive than the Golf in my view - or certainly you get a newer car for your money.

An extra £1k will get you a 66 plate ex-rental version of those with two years' manufacturer's warranty if you don't mind a fairly low spec - although with that budget I'm not seeing a high spec older Golf either. And anything that's three years newer, built to a similar standard, should be more reliable for longer.

I'd say look for something that's not considered the norm & you'll get some very good cars for your budget all will be loaded with kit as well being as reliable as the VW & in some cases have some warranty left.

What about one of these:

Kia C'eed 4 Tech 3 years warranty still on the car so that should give you some peace of mind

Or a 4 with 4 years Warranty

Or if you want more comfort Kia Optima, my brother has one as his daily & over the last three years it's been faultless, he's only selling to buy another but auto this time.

Optima 2/3 (the higher the number the better the spec)

Mazda3

Alfa Giuletta Auto/Manual

Volvo C30 R Design Auto

V40 D3

I'd take any of these over the Golf but the Kia's seems to tick a lot of your boxes.
