No

I am fairly sure there has to be a valid MOT on the car to transfer the plate off onto your current car. As you scrapped it, I think it is long gone.

Only if the registered owner and keeper (i.e. person on the logbook) will allow you to take it - sounds like it's still on the road and not scrapped from the limited info above.

If you are still the owner and keeper and have the logbook - which you shouldn't if it was scrapped correctly - then it's a simple process of sorting a V72(?) or doing it online

I thought this, but bought a "ringing kit" on eBay for the plate and the car hadn't been in the road in 2decades (or existed as it should really) and the dvla issued the plate on retention no probs at all - I had to fill in a few forms and speak with them but was fine

Go to the breakers yard and ask them if they still have the car in their possession

A replacement V5 from another car, meaning that if your car is cat C/D, stolen or otherwise illegitimate you can swap the number plate and VIN plate over to match the new V5 rather than the old one essentially changing the identity of your car.

Although in alorotom's case he used it for a far less dubious purpose.

I believe there is an appeal process
I had a car stolen years ago with a personal plate . Was found burnt out was promptly written off by the insurance company. I then wanted to transfer number to new car. was told by dvla I couldnt because original car was scrapped . after many appeals and many letters and phone calls I got my reg back

That's interesting. Same thing happened to me - car stolen and stripped for spares, and thus an insurance write-off. Since the car no longer exists, the DVLA reckon I cannot have it re-allocated, even though I've offered to pay any admin costs. I've had a whine at them a couple of times, but they won't budge.

Any hints about an appeal? Is there a procedure or definitive process?

That's so sad.
The answer would seem to put one's plate on retention ASAP after an accident that might write the car off.
Thanks for the info.

Thanks. I know my MP well. Might give him a visit. All I've had from the DVLA is long e-mails quoting the rules and regulations - it's almost a "computer says no" scenario. I can't believe it can't be done, and indeed your story confirms this. They just can't be bothered, more like.

Problem with phoning them is enduring a 45-minute wait on hold listening to Neil Diamond.

Mine is one of the "magic 10" that are keeping Theresa May in power. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. He's also the guy with the highest expenses of any MPs, but he works really hard for his constituents. I have often passed his office at 10pm and seen him beavering away.

I agree that he probably can't do anything, but hey ho, worth a try. I'm actually not really a private plate sort of person, but I had come into some money, bought a new car, and saw the plate in an advert in the paper, single number and my initials, and thought why not? Now it's going to sit in the dark recesses of the DVLA computer for eons just because a pen-pusher can't be bothered to do 5 minutes work.

Still- I've managed now for 10 years without it, so there's a good chance my life will continue in First-World fashion as per usual. Unlike the numpties whose work is displayed on the "really bad number plates" thread.
