OK, here goes, I posted this on MLOC but hardly anything ever happens there, so I'll ask here instead

Is there an easy way for me to tell the difference (on sight) between an Elise S1, S2, 111s and 111r, I find it all very confusing and they all look the same to me

very easy to tell difference between elise S1 and elise S2 - cos they look completely different...though Im sure you know that anyway

How to tell between elise S2 standard and Elise S2 111 anything, is the wheels - basic ones have pretty 'flat' 6 spoke wheels, 111 everything has those cool dive in spider stylee wheels.

I have absilutely no idea how you tell difference between S1 standard and S1 111s except for badge on back though....

S1 standard and 111S have different wheels and normally headlamp covers (those these are available on standard s1's)

Difference between 111S & 111R S2's is in the rear exhausts, central on 111R, left and right side of car on 111S

Very easy, S1 and S2 look very different:
S1 has simple round headlights and small round tail lights, S2 has compound covered headlights (think Puma) and larger round rear lights (a bit Ferrari-ish). S2 also has squarer lines than S1.

Now, the big give away on your new 111R is that the front "bonnet" area that covers the radiator and brake reservoirs in not sunk very deeply against the central spine (this is to clear the brake servo) whereas Rover engined cars have a very pronounced recess. At the rear, you have twin pipes exitting together under the diffuser in the centre, whereas a Rover engined car has them in the mesh on each side.

If it's a Rover engined car with the wheels off your car, then it's probably a 111S. They also have 3 part rear diffusers but I think they may have found their way onto later 118bhp cars..

See? Simple!

I was going to post pictures of each, but can't be bothered (warning, don't search google images for elise s1 with safesearch off!).

Instead, refer to this page www.elises.co.uk/models/index.html which gives photographic examples of each model. I'll just list key features.

OK, here goes

S1 elise is identified by the much curvier design than the S2. From the front, look for the round, frog-eye like headlights, from the rear, look for the curvy rump, with twin exhausts right next to each other, bang in the middle - where the anus might be.

S2 elise is much more angular and is easily spotted from the front by the japanese slit-eye headlights and from the rear by the position of the exhausts - one on each side, and lower down than the S1.

Now that's the basic differences out of the way, here's how to identify the more common specific models (of course, there are many more differences than I will bother listing, but here are the key ones to help you spot the difference from a distance):

340r - like nothing you've seen before!

S1 Exige - big-arsed spoiler and engine bay cover. fixed roof - completely different rear in fact (see picture) - unmissable!

S1 111S - as standard S1 but six spoke wheels, a low spoiler on the rear, and headlamp covers at the front.

S1 Sport 160 - as 111S but with a higher spoiler and lowered suspension as standard. Very lumpy engine so it's generally found stalled at traffic lights.

Vauxhall VX220 - looks like a housebrick and has Vauxhall badge. (sorry guys!)

S2 111S - as standard S2 but nice wheels with spokes that stick out (see picture). Hard to spot difference over standard from a distance, so get close and look for the 111S stickers!

S2 111R - most obvious difference is the location of the exhausts - pipes are next to each other, but don't stick out of the bodywork, instead they are located below the rear undertray, in the middle.

Hope this helps!

From the rear you can tell the difference in the following ways

S1 (standard) no spoiler
S1 (111S & Sport 160, 190) have a raised spoiler

S2 (standard) has a flat diffuser under the bumper
S2 (111S) has a curved diffuser.
S2 (111R) same as s2 111S but with exhausts under the diffuser

sorry!! Its just kinda that they are REALLY different, where as all the differnces between 'in range models' (so S1 standard, S1 111s, S1 Sport 160 S1, Sport 190 :: S2 standard (can be basic, Racetech or Sportstourer, but these are packs not differnt models) S2 111s, 111r) are just minor details - as mustard has clearly shown!

cheers
