But, to put that in perspective, I reckon I spent more than £200 in tolls on the French peages in a fortnight.

Odd situation I guess. The £280 is worth every penny for my Lotus loving, but it is ironic that my BM does 3 or 4 times the mileage at £165 tax. Go figure.

The sooner they combine tax with petrol consumption the better/worse, but simpler it will be.

I just found a list showing the tax for every current model
http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Emissions_and_Road_Tax

It needs updating but just add £10 to the amounts.

Looks like the new 1.6 is the cheapest at £130.00

That is more than a year's worth for a lot of Elises!

(Not mine, I think I've averaged about 5000 a year)

While I understand the issue contained in the article, I find it strange to relate motorway driving and Lotus ownership. Living in France, duriing my two and a half years of Lotus ownership, not once did I feel the need to go take the pay roads. Far more fun taking other roads. Obviously more time consuming, although not as much as one might imagine, but took my pleasure from driving through wonderful parts of France rather than the motorway bash. If I wanted a motorway cruiser I'd have bought a Mercedes. Moral of the story, more fun and far cheaper by staying off the the toll roads

The point was that by paying UK road tax we have the right to use the motorways if we so choose.

Those first year rates are pretty aggressive for anything over 165g/km.

There was a recent discussion about dropping the annual VED CO2 loading and front loading it all onto the first year - argument being that once cars are made they will be owned and used, so penalising the subsequent owners is completely pointless. Seems to have gone quiet, though.

Apart from the fact it raises huge amounts of money every year.

There is that! But the point of the graduated VED is supposed to be to influence car choice, and the only person who really has that power is the first buyer.

Surely resale values come into this. If people want low co2 cars then the original purchaser of a gas guzzler will be crippled on resale value.

It's part of the picture, but depreciation isn't in the buyer's face like first year tax.

A small note here as the Government must think we are too stupid to notice, when it comes to paying out its the CPI that is used to calculate what crumbs can be handed out yet when the government wishes to take cream money from the taxpayer its done via the RPI.

I am all for paying fair taxes but the rules should be the same for all either use RPI or CPI

If the car was registered on or after 1 March 2001, there's a series of car tax bands based on fuel type and CO2 emission levels.

Budget 2013
It was announced in the Budget that Vehicle Excise Duty Rates will increase by RPI indexation. The new rates are shown in the table.
