I hope to buy a Mark 2 early Spring and was checking out some insurance quotes.

Back in September Direct Line quoted me £920 and now when I check the price online it has jumped up to £1300! some have been as high as £1700!

I am 28, 4 years no claims, no convictions etc...

Any idea why the prices seem to be rocketing? Sept 11th events perhaps filtering through to the car insurance market?

I tried Tescos as advised in another posting but they wouldn't give me an online quote so will have to call.

Cheers

Where do you 2 guys live? Kabul?

I'm with Direct Line, S1, Leeds, not garaged, 26 (now 27) 5 years protected NCB + £150 voluntary xs. £820 in April 2001.

I do like to keep an eye on the price of my insurance so that I do not get a shock at renewal. Yesterday I got a quote from DL & it was ~£770.

Tesco also refused to quote me on-line.

I called them last month (DL was again £770) & they quoted £720ish with a £500 (in total) xs.

FYI 11 September appears to have made sweet FA difference. My girlfriend was quoted £689 for her Ford KA by DL last month & now the price is £530!?!?. Tesco was also the best price for her so far.

Whatever you do, don't phone DL. I struggled at first with getting a quote on line with DL so called them. The person I spoke to didn't know their tit from their arse & ended up quoting me for a S1 sport, originally.

Re: Where do you 2 guys live? Kabul?

I live in Glasgow - G41 - a decent enough area ( honest! :-)

If the insurance is gonna be over 1K I may have to postpone my Mk2 Purchase :-(

Thanks for your advice. Will keep looking.

Andy,

Im 27, protected no claims, Hampshire, Elise S2 is £750.

Try ringing Cheam insurance brokers - 020 8770 1001, and ask for Mark Abbott. They insure all my vehicles (via DL, NU etc..) at much better prices than most of the others

I dont think them being London based would be a problem

Night

p.s. remember that the trick with insurance companies is to tell them you already have a quote, and that its x, y or z (£920 in your case) - cos then they'll try and beat it. Otherwise they'll just make something up you might go for.

I had a S1 Elise, cost me £625 Fully Comp Protected NCB. This is with Bell Direct. (Living Hampshire and OK, fair cop, I'm a Police Officer). Sadly my better half wrote the car off in a smash. Bell were superb. Taken to their repairers the next day, they couldn't repair it, so took digital photos and e-mailed a report to Portfield Cars (Lotus Franchise). Car went to them the same day. They scratched their heads and decided they couldn't fix it economically, and Bell sent me a cheque for £20K. (2000/V car). All with no fuss and virtually no paperwork. And I asked for a quote on a replacement car, and it was still a three figure sum. Give them a call.

My girlfriend insures her S1 98 with FNC here in Essex (brentwood) for £650 with BarclayCard. She is 30 with one claim for a hit and run, an I've got 3 points from nearly years ago. The car is also tunned up with to 165 bhp with new ECU, cams, exhaust, airbox, polished cylinder head etc.

My S2 135 is just under £900 but I'm 29.

If you car is not modified try Autotorque or Taylor Price Direct Choice.

I'm with Direct Line, Elsie S2 Type 72 - I have an SP50 (motorway speeding) and a claim for fire damage Oct last year (although I had no claims protection in place) even with this fully comp with protection £ 800 although I am a little older than some of u guys 37 !

If you have a spouse / partner put them on the cover it will knock about £ 50 off (obviously on the insurance and actually driving it are two differant things !)
