If you like revs you need an 'R'. End of story.

true, but bear in mind that the gearing means you're breaking the speed limit in all but first gear when you use those revs...

So, if i got this right, the SC is really not an option. It's quite expensive and will just add more power on the second cam.
Not at all....the SC makes the power much more easily useable/accessible throughout the rev range...you don't have to rev the nuts off it like the R to make it go banzai.
I've had both R and now SC....sc wins every time!! No brainer if funds allow.

After driving an SC, I found it was a very demanding car and loved to be pushed, VERY exciting but I was always looking for the next overtake and not easy to drive on busy roads. Friends with the SC have produced better economy than standard though....

Couldn't disagree more....it does love to be pushed, but it's so much easier to doddle around town and when overtaking you don't need to drop it 3 gears to hit the higher revs. The supercharger makes it completely easier to drive......unless you like revving the tits off the car.

On another note....I'd go for a Toyota engined before the K series every time.....but maybe that's just me. Had both...an early S2 Race Tech K series 120 was my first, then 111R, now SC. I definitely feel more confident in the Toyota's reliability. Can't make a direct comparison btwn the 111s and 111r tho, although there seem to be plenty of fans of both.
Suck it n see. Try them all before you decide.

You need a R and the later car the better. I found a huge difference when looking at pre 08 cars and the later ones. The refinement fit and finish were easily as good as the boxster S that I had virtually no wind noise with the hardtop and you get the newer black dash, matching black rear diffuser and black dash with the change up rev lights.. I would also go for the full alcantara pro bax seats on doors, dash , gear tunnel the traction control, airocn, and the adjustable bilsetins that you get with the extended sport pack... Just love it when the second cam comes on stream its a real event making a quick car even more exhilerating...i also think they will hold their value over time better thanm the std S.

I'd be confident of that too. The R looks like being the last of the high powered NA cars and given the decent fit and finish............

Are there any approved tuning/re-map mods that:

- Boost the performance of the 134bhp 'S'?

- Or, improve the mid-range response of the 111R (ie make it less peaky) ?

Without wishing to state the obvious, there's always a supercharger. Lotus even do an official one for the R.

There are a number of remap/reflash options for the R that drop the cam-change point and smooth out the whole transition. Off the top of my head there's Essex Autosport (Sinclaire's), Hangar111 and Lotus themselves. I went with the reflash from Sinclaire's - about £250 and it has transformed the car. Popped it in the post on a Tuesday and got it back a couple of days later - superb service and well recommended

For the S there's this:

For serious power upgrades there are s/c and turbo kits but to be honest they're bloody expensive and you'd be better off buying an Elise SC with a warranty and better resale potential.

I still find it amazing they use the same steering wheel they put in the VX220 a decade ago and god knows why they think Alcantara is a good thing to put on the sill and next to the wheel. In the winter everytime I get in wet muddy shoe gets wiped straight across this area. If it was anything but hard plastic or Aluminium it'd be trashed in no time.

M8 never had a issue getting my leg over.. Besides when you know it alcantara your a little more careful not damaging marking the sills. I havnt seen another Elise with the interior spec mine has it was only introduced on the black and White editions..

I know I’m a bit late to the party here by 10 years but it’s an interesting thread.

I had a 111R 4 years ago and faced the same debate back then when buying and I sold that and bought a 111S.

I loved the 111R but you had to really wind her up all the time and it felt really lacking power low revs where as the 111S feels more instant. Also the 111R felt heavier.

Both excellent cars. I am now looking to put my 111S up for sale. It’s a 2004 car if you are interested please send me a message.

"I know I’m a bit late to the party here by 10 years but it’s an interesting thread." Haha!

It's amazing how this question is still relevant, mainly because nothing has come along in 10 years and significantly bettered either variant. I came to the conclusion that there isn't really a bad Elise variant, but they are all slightly different. It is mainly personal preference.
Back when I was looking a 111R was commonly considered the best bet but I've since heard strong augments for a 111S being the last of the really "pure' Elises; ultra light K-series, no servo brakes, lighter car and still comparably quick compared to a 111R in the real world. But S1's are the original and also wonderful, and S3's and any of the special variants....it goes on and on. A 111S definitely is a great choice though.

Here in 2023, looking to buy a 111S or 111R both now aging classics! This debate has been fascinating, but I wonder, 13 years later do all the same arguments still stack up?

I’m moving from a standard 118bhp ‘02 car I’ve owned for over a decade so the 111S seems like the logical choice for me.

Any thoughts?
