Hello All,

Have you Imported a car from the UK into Ireland. Wondering how this experience went for people who have done this?

Thanks

No issues on the Irish side to be fair, but it was a pain in the ass for me as the DVLA issued an incorrect V5 twice (had to prove twice that a TVR Tuscan was not a 4 door saloon). Took the best part of 5 months to resolve and had to pay an additional fine on the VRT as car must be registered with 30 days of it landing in Ireland.

Only potential pitfall is if it is a specialist car, it doesn't appear on revenues VRT calculator. This leaves the VRT amount as an unknown and, depending on the emissions level can be up to 34% (possibly 36% can't quite remember) of what Irish revenue deem it to be worth. There is an appeal mechanism though.

Although if you own the car in the UK for a period of time and are relocating to Ireland, it could be VRT free.

Thanks for the feedback. Interesting to see these issues pop up. Is there anything you could have done better in hindsight, do you think?

Thanks @majordad

The thread is from about 9 years ago and I'm sure things might have changed since then. But it's interesting to see those opinions too.

Yes, should have taken the car out of the country and brought it back in again when I received the correct V5!

As I said, the process was simple for me, apart from the DVLA screw up. As the Tuscan was specialist, it was not on the VRT calculator, but the VRT payment was 25% less than I anticipated. I did calculations on he worst case scenario.
