Driving from Dublin to Waterford I was stopped just outside of Carlow (which I now hear is notorious) by an unmarked police car. They said I was doing 140 kph. which I admit is very dangerous.. However, they advised me to slow down, and let us leave. .within about half an hour, we noticed we were being followed for about 5 miles by a Garda car , I was not speeding, as there was another car in front of me and I was being extremely cautious, however once that car moved, the garda pulled in front of us and directed me off the main road, I had my little boy in the car and I was worried, I know I wasn't doing anything wrong The Garda was very belittling, constantly going on about 'how Irish roads aren't like English roads' and disbelieving that I lived in the UK, he was nasty he kept us for about half an hour going back and forth to his car, my friend was so upset its put her off ever going to Ireland again. anyway, moving on, I received a fine which I paid, now I've had a letter from the Irish RSA saying they will apply 3 points to my license, how can they do this? and can I appeal?

Have a read of http://watterssolicitors.ie/penalty-points-for-dri... Might be someone worth contacting - I've no affiliation nor is this a recommendation.

North/South Ireland penalty point recognition is in place. I'm unsure if there is recognition between Ireland and Eng., Sco. and Wales though.

Sorry that you and your friend feel so about visiting Ireland again. Generally our Gardaí are very fair.

- Were you speeding the second time ?

- Did you get a warning you would be summonsed for speeding on the second occasion ?

Half an hour seems inordinate for a delay, It's always about five or ten minutes.

- Are there any other issues / factors , with you or the car , are you a terrorist or someone usually pulled in the UK ?

Finally, you will not get points on your UK Licence for this, believe me. However, if you ever apply for an Irish Licence it will come with those points added to it.

Enjoy Ireland and our roads.

I found the Garda very reasonable and fair when I was stopped at 97 mph on the way from Limerick to Dublin. A stern interactive discussion, a warning about a speed camera on a bridge entering Dublin further on my journey. Finally a “drive safely and a friendly wave to send me on my way.

I never exceeded the speed limit in Ireland after that event, lesson learned.

For balance I also find the uk bobbies very fair too.
