Apologies to all of you out there that this seems like the most basic question on the forum for weeks silly but I have last week begun my love affair with a real flesh and blood TVR rather than photos. I have a 2002 Tamora with an engine rebuild - 3.6 done in 2008/9 what is the best engine oil that I should use? The oroginal manual say Mobil 1 10W/40 is that the same as Mobil Super 2000 X1 10W/40 or should I use a higher rating? Are there better oils out there?

Thanks for your help bow

I use (or will do when the shotty running in mineral oil is gone) Shell Helix 10/40 semi syn. I believe this grade is recommended for the S6 engine.

Does it feel like Christmas? When you get it back the peddle on the right engages warp speed smile

Mobil 1 is fully synthetic and Mobil super 2000 is semi synth, and 10w 40 semi synth seems to be what all engine builders recommend these days.

I think as long as its a decent brand and semi synth 10w 40 you should be OK. Shell, Sylkolene, Motul, Mobil etc all sell good semi synth.

Does anyone know why semi-synth? I was advised against synth oil years ago for tuned air cooled VW engines due to it not transferring heat as well as mineral oil, but never knew if it was the case or not.

It may be because when engine builders have refreshed engines, if you swap to fully synth too early you do risk glazing the bores as the oil is 'too good'. Semi synth for 6k is the advice i was given, but that even if you continue with semi synth its not a problem with a good brand....

Maybe the older non rebuilt engines would be better on fully synth...but TBH i cant see this making much difference...

I think Power's warranty specifically states to use semi-synth and use of fully synth voids cover.

This is true. 10w40 semi-synth only on power rebuilds.

Unless I'm getting very confused - will have to check where it's written down - Str8six recommended that I used mobil super 3000, although I can't remember which grade!
