How odd! Just been for a run, temp staying around 95c at idle with both fans kicking in. I then let it cool and checked the filler neck which only had a small puddle of fluid in it. I therefore filled it up again, it took a whole litre of coolant.
I thought I'd found the leak. There is no coolant leaking under the car. WTF!!!

I've believe you get issues like this when the rad cap fails. I think you get air in the system where it doesn't hold pressure. The air pockets make it seem like you've used coolant. Worth putting a new one on there just in case. Apparently you need to use a genuine vw one, as the ones from GSF fail pretty quickly. I thought I'd found the leak. There is no coolant leaking under the car. WTF!!!

New rad cap fitted and all temps fine.
Not used the car much over winter but 6 months from the start of this post, I have discovered a coolant puddle on the passenger side by the front wheel. I therefore fitted new ACT hoses and bled the radiator, but still have coolant leaking from the same place. The radiator is an ally one fitted by Power in 2008, 10,000 miles ago. Surely this can't be leaking after 10,000 miles?

I have a vacuum tool, but the vacuum tool requires dropping all the coolant out really. The leak even if minute shows up as the system wont hold a vacuum, the loss of which shows up on a gauge.
The good thing with the vacuum purge tool is if theres no leak, you stick the inlet hose in a bucket of coolant and it sucks it all back in replacing the air.... requires little or no bleeding.

I had this when I started to mess, the steel pipe at the front of the engine leaked and I decided to change the hoses, thermostat, coolant and cap. 3 months later I would fill it up, run it and it would be fine and then spit coolant everywhere.
I changed to a VW cap and the advice was let it find its own level. I bled it 20 times I reckon, and each time it would do the same. I'd fill it up, run it and then it would spit coolant over the floor. Frustrated I rang a few people and the advice was let it find its own level, they are all different. Keep an eye on the temps, if it is running normally then don't worry.
It seems the more you mess with these cars the worse things get.
If the temps can't stay below 96 and there is constant coolant leaks then it might be a headgasket or other woes, but having spent 3 months worrying about rebuilds it has been fine for 12 months. There is an issue that there isn't lots of head on the system so some of the Sag guys have jacked up the front of the car and built funnels to help the bleeding.

One other pont the silicone hoses need regular tightening as they creep after a while.

If its by the front wheel double check its not a weeping oil cooler. Mine was slightly so I rebuilt it but wouldn't have thought you'd get a puddle.
It's more than likely as Neill says just finding its level I went through this. In the tank elbow I only have about 3 mm of coolant. Anymore it simply ejects it when hot. It never goes beyond 95 in the summer so I've left the level where it is.
