Simple enough question, and I hope someone can answer.

The S6 engine is dry-sumped. So, is it possible to replace the upper oil line without draining the oil?

I'm talking about the big oil line that runs from the back of the block, along the top of the engine under the throttle bodies, and terminates in the main oil pump at the front of the engine, all accessible from the engine bay.

Mine is leaking at the junction of the metal fixing and the rubber hose, and repair bandage has not been effective so I think replacing it would be better, and if it can be done without draining the oil then it is a job I'm happy to undertake.

You can see the oil line in the following pic. It runs horizontally across the centre of the pic.

And here it is in context.

It is totally doable without draining the oil. You’re going to need something big though to crank both ends of that line.

When I stripped my engine that was pretty damn tight, I used an adjustable wrench over a foot long. Ooo errr

Awesome. That's good news. Thanks!

Blimey. eek That's slightly less good news. frown

I have a 300mm adjustable spanner, so that should be big enough. Does it undo easily enough or does that where the foot-long comes into play?

Depends really. I guess yours has been apart in the last few years so theoretically should be easily doable. I suspect mine, tank end hadn’t so really needed some ooomph.

In fact when I undid the lower feed side the thread from the tank came with the pipe... yikes.

Apologies for a potentially stupid question, but assuming I get it off ok, does the new one have seals and just bolts straight on, or do you need to apply some kind of seal yourself (eg. when plumbing you'd use PTFE tape to seal the joint).

The engine end will have been off a couple of years ago on the last engine rebuild, and the car has done less that 1000 miles since then. So that should be ok.
Not sure about the tank end.

Now that's scary. That's putting me off trying it now. eek

I'll give it a good dose of PlusGas and see how I get on. If it's not budging with reasonable force I'll stop.

It's a little late at night to go out and try it now so I will have a go tomorrow evening.

New hose should be good to go, you shouldn’t need to put anything on it!

Ohh and don’t touch the plate on that side which houses the 100 amp fuse. You’ll see why when you become the earth point hehe

Correct... so when your spanner/ratchet etc touches it magical things happen.

Just to record a key bit of information that may benefit someone further down the line who stumbles across this thread due to google or whatever...

I failed to get the hose off, so paid a local specialist to do it and also to do a minor service. I did source and supply the part for them, as I had already bought a replacement by then.

However, the upper oil line as supplied by the TVR parts supplier that I bought it from, which was sold as being for several Speed 6 engined cars including the Sagaris, does not fit - the Sagaris uses a shorter line than the other cars.

My local specialist ended up having to get a custom hose made for me, and I have returned the original hose to the aforementioned company that supplies TVR parts for a refund.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. That hose is the main HP feed to the engine, and you say it comes from the pump? I can see your oil cooler so I'm really interested to know what's different on the Sag!

On my Cerbera, it comes from the oil cooler which is by definition therefore running at high pressure. You can see almost all my hoses in this pic, the only only one not visible is the HP intake from the bottom of the tank to the HP pump. I hope the image works for you because it's linking to Facebook! fb.com/mys6cerbera

I can see the pic, but your engine looks very different to mine. Where are your throttle bodies? confused

The line I had replaced runs under the throttle bodies and connects to the rear of the block.
