Hi,

Am considering a dash cam(s) for my rented A6 that's been subject to two bits of damage since I got it last August:

1) nearside rear door spray painted
2) scrape on offside rear bumper (turns out was neighbours - will charge them whatever I'm charged at end of lease)

The car can spend as many as ten or so days not being moved (on-street parking) so I would like a front & a rear camera hard wired.

I've found a place that will supply and fit a BlackVue DR650S (front and rear) for £650 inc VAT. I assume this to be a slightly older model from this brand than the one suggested above. I reckon that's about £350 for the fitting/labour but I've no idea how many hours it would take a company to do.

What do you all think?
Cheers

2 hours max to fit the cameras, I could probably do it in one at a push and I'm no pro , really easy to fit yourself

Is 10 days going to be ok? How much current do they take and how long before the card is full?

Thanks - I'll look into self-installation, it's just the hard-wiring I don't trust myself being able to do :-)

Good point about the card's storage and I also wondered if I'd get a flat battery after ten or so days.

I've got a DD Pai M6, I'm getting a Citroen C3 which has the built in dashcam in the rear view mirror.

So, option 1 is to keep the DD Pai, fit it into the back window and wire it up to power, probably using the USB adapter in the 12v socket as it is now in my Citigo, but with a longer USB lead channeled somehow to the back of the car from the dashboard (I don't want to mess around with fuses and wiring into the live power. Where in the back window it goes would depend on where I can stick it around the roof or hatch, and what area of the window the wiper clears.

Option 2 is to sell it to my dad and maybe be IT support for a bit setting it up on his phone.

A dash camera would not run for 10 days as mentioned above. With a power magic pro installed, dependant on car, you could see a few hours to a day or so, maybe 2 at the most. Vehicles were never made for consumers to plump in dash cameras and try and use them as replacements for CCTV cameras.

£650 including fitting is absolutely Ludacris for the older model - run in the opposite direction.

The DR650S is discontinued, and I most definitely wouldn't be opting for a camera now approaching 2.5 years of age on the market, when it's direct replacement has only just been released several months ago, FOR THE SAME RRP PRICE confused

We charge £540 fully supplied & fitted with a Power Magic Pro battery monitor device, fully hardwired in, at your door, for the brand new DR750S - 2CH. Even this price, I'm not happy with & would like to do this package cheaper, but we unfortunately have to make money on the units, and when you get them for more or less the same price as a member of the public but have to deal with warranties & replacements at your own cost, you end up having to add on some margin to the product to cover the trips back out to the customer for such events.

We however, unlike most others, will do a mobile 2 channel installation at £90, should you wish to purchase the camera yourself, allowing you to save money on the unit as we aren't inclined to deal with the warranty.

For people that say a hardwire installation can be done in under an hour, this is absolutely mince. We as trained fitters with years of experience, spend 1 to 1.5 hours on a typical installation between two, doing an install and then 30 minutes doing a setup and demo with the customer. By this, I mean removing panel upon panel to correctly secure wires to the exiting wiring loom, removing interior handles from the headliner to ensure the wires are routed behind the airbags and not in front, removing A Pillars, C Pillars, kick panels and then fuse box testing to ensure we are using non safety critical fuses to power your dash camera. There's a massive difference in a job done by a professional in contrast to a job done by someone who's installed one for his friends, and became a self pro claimed dash camera installer.

How does everyones dash camera cope with stop start traffic & being sat at traffic lights?

The one I bought (Senwow G55) stops recording then starts recording then stops. This is with parking guard off & on its lowest setting of sensitivity.

Mine is fine, where is yours connected to for power?

Mine is tapped off the 12v socket wire, and that stays live during stop/start

Its hard-wired into the fuse box & has power all the time.

I have the cut off voltage set to 12V on my 2CH Thinkware F750. A brand new high quality/high capacity battery with a decent charge on it will run parking mode for 12-18 hours. In this weather with a short journey charge I’m lucky to see 3-4 hours.

This year I've had two no fault accidents.
Both times the other party admitted liabilty and then changed their story.
I think the way to go is a "black box" dash cam.
Any recomendations ?
I want one that is almost like a race V box which shows speed etc.

Cheers
I found a dash cam with GPS and WiFi functions, and it's a dual lens dash cam.

That is currently the best dash camera on the market (in our professional opinion). The sheer way in which Blackvue design, research and create their cameras, means the current DR750S has technology within it that will see off any other dash camera even coming close to it's specs, for at least the next year.

Purchase one with a Blackvue Power Magic pro battery monitor device, hardwire it in or have someone professionally hardwire it in for you, and the parking mode will work like a dream based on motion & impact.

Thanks, Jay
amazing, thank you. from the way you word your post it sounds like you're in the business of dashcams, is that correct? and if so, are you anywhere near North London?

I would be very grateful if you could answer one more question for me - I hear there's a 4K BlackVue coming out soon, do you think it'll be worth the wait & increased price for the bump in video quality?

Yes sorry guys, I'm in Glasgow, Scotland cry I'm more just on here to share the knowledge we have, with other consumers who are considering the purchase of a dash camera. We absolutely believe these are a necessity in ever vehicle, and anything we can personally help to do to ensure people buy the right camera for their requirements is worth the time we spend on here teacher

I've not heard of the 4k Blackvue, and I'm signed up to their official newsletters. Where did you see it? Nextbase bought out a 4k dash camera around 3 months ago, and it's not popular at all, we have installed zero. The sheer price, vs the increased cost of SD card required for these means they are currently a long way away from being popular. The DR750S is number plate clear already, it doesn't require 4k. A dash cameras sole purpose is to capture a number plate if possible, and the incident which occurred, it's not trying to make a movie out of a normal commute at the best resolution available currently to then overwrite it 3 hours later.

Also, a lot of people aren't aware, but your local car audio installation place, or someone who installs car alarms, bluetooth parrot kits or any form of in car vehicle entertainment, will more than likely happily install a dash camera for you. These places are unfortunately owned by the same long term auto sparks who haven't actually clicked on yet the massive market for dash camera installations, and they don't update their website or even facebook, to reflect an installation service, but nearly every single one of them would find installing a dash camera far easier than some of the more technical installations they do currently.

Thanks, Jay

Hi,

I do appreciate the help and advice, thank you very much, if I were located near Glasgow I would definitely drive further to hand my car off to you!

The 4k BlackVue was announced at SEMA 2017, here is a link with some video about it https://www.blackvue.com/blackvue-teases-upcoming-... It's going to be the DR900S, rumoured to be released in mid-2018. From what I know I think they will be using H.265 video compression on it which is a big bonus as the 4k files may not take up that much more space on an SD card!

I did give my local audio shop a ring today and they do dashcam installs, but he recommended a Thinkware F800 Pro to me over the Blackvue 750S. I personally like the cloud features of the BlackVue, but he said the night vision on the Thinkware F800 is much better and as I do a lot of driving at night that's made me think twice. Do you agree with this opinion?

Thanks again!

Hi there,

I've just had a look at now that you have brought it to my attention. Seems a fantastic camera, if that is the case, and they do compress the video in the more sought after H.265 format, and not revert back to H.264 to keep costs down, then it will indeed combat the big issue of storage. I suspect you would need to run a endurance card with a 4k dash camera, whereas currently with the DR750S, you can run a standard Samsung 128Gb Evo Class 10 UHS-1, £25 and if it goes pop after a year, it's not £60 down the drain.

We actually tested both cameras side by side when they first came out last year (Youtube video below). The specs on paper state the higher bitrate 12Mbps DR750S should win, and the lower 10Mbps F800 should loose, but in daytime video, I found the Thinkware slightly sharper.

I never saved any video of the night time footage but it was very clear in both when tested, with almost no difference unlike the daytime footage. For the Blackvue, to get a better night time picture, it does require you to turn on a feature called 'Enhanced Night Vision' in the Blackvue settings, but that aside, I've had no issues with it and I have the DR750S personally fitted in my own vehicle.

The cloud functionality is something I use religiously with the Blackvue. Having the luxury of a business phone & personal phone, whenever out, I leave one in the car and turn on personal hotspot, within seconds, my DR750S is configured to connect to it, and from the point on, the camera will send me notifications of motion detection and more importantly, any impact. At any point, this gives you the power to go onto the app and remotely live view what the camera is seeing in real time, and of course, see the clips which the camera has flagged as 'impact'

In addition, when you enter the car, the camera will inform you when how many impact moments it picked up while parked, if any, it's worthwhile taking a walk around your vehicle.

I personally would sick with the DR750S, especially if cloud functionality is important to you.

Thanks, Jay
