I ordered one for the snotter to try it out and it's permanently in the car now. the quality for SD is excellent and it only cost £28. It's the one that TechMoan reviewed and they also make an HD version which is the one I will get for the Bimmer.

As I said, cannot recommend them highly enough.

Seems the price of the basic one has come down a bit since the review, but the HD one has shot up in price? You can see the review here.

Like that. Surely there is a market for a £60-80 quid device with a decent feature set, rear cam, in car cam, GPS, and both cameras with flying leads so the damn thing doesn't have to sit in the window all the time!?I'm confused! Which camera is the current 'one to go for'?
Like NiceCupOfTea said, I want something discrete that fits behind the rear view mirror and can be hard wired into the car. I also want it to start up when the car is started and continually record.
High quality is good but I don't need HD... I also want to spend around £50 so that rules out Roadhawk

As mentioned elsewhere in the thread you can get some pretty good iPhone and Android apps that perform just as well (if not better) than a lot of the dedicated car DVRs.
I've used AutoGuard Blackbox on my Galaxy S3.
My phone is always mounted in my car for music/GPS usage and its second nature to remove it, so its no hassle in that respect.
The positives with this particular app are full GPS recording and it records video in the background, so you can still use your phone as a phone. The quality is pretty damn good (most modern phones can record in 1080p after all). Its auto on when you insert it into your car mount and it automatically deletes old video files if you run out space.
You do need a decent mount for your car though, and one which obviously leaves the camera lens on the back of the phone exposed! I've got a 32gb mini SD card in my phone so space isn't really an issue. A decent mount can cost nearly as much as some of the cheap Chinese DVRs.
Oh and some of the updates from the developer can mess around with certain functions on certain phones, but he/she usually releases another update within a day or so to sort it out.
Its free on android (or about £1.50 for the full version), so if you have a decent mount, its a good cheap starting point in the world of car DVRs.

It still hasn't arrived. I contacted the seller and he's sent another one. So I may end up with two, if this is the case i'll have a spare.
Anyone want to start the bidding?

Mines always in the car, mounted to the windscreen out of the way. It's hard-wired to the car (all cables hidden), whenever the ignition comes on so does my dash camera (I have 2 - one in the front, one in the rear). When it's full (32GB card in each one means ~11 hours of video) it deletes the oldest video and it turns off automatically when I turn the ignition off.
Don't ever have to touch it.
And it only cost me ~£40, plus ~£6 for a decent mount.
Front one is hidden up behind the rear view mirror (can't see it from the drivers seat)
Rear one is hidden behind the drivers side rear passenger headrest
Jakg, what's the make and model and where did you get them from please?Don't ever have to touch it.

I've just started with one of the many free "blackbox" apps on the Android Market - AutoGuard.
It records in 720p, has GPS position and speed that it embeds into the video file for viewing separately or together, crash detection with the phone's gyro.
Cost me £5.99 for a windscreen mount and in-car charger, and it's brilliant.

For those who hardwired thiers i'm assuming you ran it into the headlining?
Mine goes up the A-pillar behind the trim, then tucked under the headlining. The rear one goes down the drivers side sill under the carpet.S6PNJ said:

http://dx.com/p/2-5-lcd-high-resolution-vehicle-mount-video-camcorder-with-sd-card-slot-wide-angle-35356It doesn't have a proper make or model like most Chinese gear - but it's really good. You'll find a lot of knock-offs on eBay that look identical, but that record at VGA (or upscaled VGA to look HD) which are rubbish (I bought one originally!)
