Bit if a bump from the past but I'm out of the loop with these things since Techmoan went all hi-fi - my Aukey DR02Ds are still doing what they're intended for but I'd quite like to update them to something that's easier to get footage from without having to take the card out and put in the PC at home and has a better parking mode that boots up quick enough to actually catch the incident rather than record an empty space after it
What's the current "mid range" front and rear dashcam of choice?

The Viofo A129 Plus gets good reviews
This and the Viofo A129 Pro seemed like a next step from the very similar looking Aukey DR02 - I was just concerned a newer one might be on the way given they've been out for a while now. Spec and results looks about right for me though and I prefer the "wedge" ones like this that sit flush to the screen rather than them needing a separate mount.
If you’re after a neat installation, and have a suitable car - and don’t mind it not being powered on when the car’s parked, major downside - then FitcamX do a range of cameras that replace the front of the mirror housing, plugging into the courtesy light power feed. Looks OEM once fitted, and no cables everywhere. Connects to your phone to download footage too, no faffing with SD cards & PCs.

I too have a number of DR02’s following Techmoan’s recommendation. What's the current "mid range" front and rear dashcam of choice?
I too have noted even with the hardwire kit/movement sensor(which you can no longer get) the camera takes so long to boot up it’s probably missed the situation. I’ve taken to buying an external battery & connecting that to the other power lead to record constantly when parked up. Not ideal.
I’ve not looked into these for a few years so will read any suggestions with interest, a decent parking mode would be very useful.
This is the forum for all things Dashcam's.

For a personal recommendation have a look at Mobius camera's I've had these last many years with constant use, buy from this seller on eBay they are the manufacturer and are quite helpful.

To most people they're like vacuum cleaners. Once the technology gets to a stage where it does the job to an acceptable standard, there's no need to change them unless they break and any of the well known brands will probably do.
There's no built in obsolescence cycle here which would drive innovation and investment into new features as most people just want it to have recorded something in the rare event of an accident.
I'm still running a mobius action cam up front and check it regularly in case the card goes funny. It doesn't perform much differently to the 70mai I have mounted in the rear.

I used to use a Mobius a decade ago but it's not fit for purpose in 2023 imo when compared with the 4k dashcams today (especially in low light).
The sensor and lenses for dashcams are generally repurposed from cheap/mid tier smartphones so the same comparison applies when you compare a smart phone today with ten years ago.

Funny how the development of these things has stopped. You’d think they’d be getting better and better, yet the whole interest in them (reviews etc) has really dropped off.
The US ban on China silicon has had a big impact, the 4K dashcam I use (70mai A800s) had to be completely redesigned as the silicon was put on a ban list.Do people leave their dashcams on the windscreen 24/7?
You don't really hear of people getting their windows smashed for a satnav anymore, but I guess its mainly because most cars have it built in now.
Alot of the dashcams I've seen have a fixed mount you leave but you can easily just take the dashcam off. But all you're going to do it put it in the glove box anyway, and surely anybody looking to break in and can see the mount would presume its in the glove box also.

Isnt the point of a dash cam to leave it in all the time , just incase you get hit when parked? You don't really hear of people getting their windows smashed for a satnav anymore, but I guess its mainly because most cars have it built in now.

No one's nicking a dashcam when you can pick them up cheap as chips from Amazon, AliExpress or the petrol station. There's just not the secondary market for it. It's easier to punt tools instead....
My Nextbase 312 died a deathI had a magnetic mount, but never removed it.
Just bought a Garmin mini to replace it @ £99
Sold the Nextbase mount for £35
The Garmin seems good. No display. But what’s the point when you can view via phone after 5 secs?
Does the job
I had the Nextbase car kit wiring. Reused it, with a new tail, as Garmin was the other usb type! A couple of £ from Jeff’s store.

Deal alert for the Yi Nightscape that I've been harping on about:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01CW4BUPK
Normally £69.98 - now £24.99 delivered.
Best thing about this dashcam - the capacitor and night vision/focus. It even feels way better constructed than most Nextbases.

Yea it makes sense to leave it 24/7, was just wondering on the general concensus.Even if you did unmount it, the mount would give away the fact its probably in the glovebox anyway.
I have an ongoing insurance dispute which has led me to pick up a DC. Got a Nextbase 222.

Not strictly true... my friend had her car nicked last weekhttps://www.nottinghampost.com/news/stolen-fiesta-...
The car's been found and is in the process of being returned to her, so far the only thing missing is the dashcam lol
