Just wondering, people seem happy to pay £4,000 or more for a stereo in their car but probably have a system in their house costing far less than that. I am sure there are plenty of people who also have very expensive home setups. To be fair if I was speccing up a new car I would probably go for it and yet I have a bunch of Sonos speakers at home and am more than happy with the results. I know we spend a lot of time in our cars but it really does seem to e a bit of a rip off.

Always confused me this one. I have a high end set up at home and it sounds great, but in the cars I will just deal with whatever is supplied as no matter how much you spend a car system will never sound like real musicians playing in front of you... it can't due to obvious placement restrictions on the speakers etc. Some people have a lot of money and want the best of everything, on the price of the car it isnt that much I expect.
Loads of older cars out there for those who love music, you can get a Lexus LS 430 with the Mark Levinson sound system which is pretty good for a couple of grand, there are Jags with B and O systems, Mercs with Harman Kardon and various stuff with Bose for the same money, the experts say they dont compare to a bespoke system but I have heard a couple and been very impressed. Volvos have some brilliant systems as well.

if i recall when the RS6 came out it had a 6k audio upgrade option
yep its still there 6300 now
plus 11k for the performance pack with a starting price of 80k
as fantastic as they are they are you would have to be taking meth to pay those prices

I totally understand why people would add a £4-5k stereo as an option on a car with £100k price tag.
Without a doubt most weeks I'll spend more time listening to music in my car than I do at home, and for someone who does a reasonable yearly mileage that adds up to many hours of listening.
Makes a lot more sense to me than adding carbon fiber bits or expensive paint.

Car systems can sound really nice, obviously not as good as a well thought out home system, but you can be sure your expensive car audio will have been designed with placement, balance and acoustics of the space in mind.
At home you have to consider the neighbours and time pressures often mean you find yourself rarely sitting down to listen to music, but in a car there are fewer distractions and you can really enjoy it. I probably listen to more music in the car than anywhere else despite having a decent stereo at home. Certainly all my current favourite CDs are in the car.
4 grand is a lot of money though, I'd have to be very rich to consider it.

Having never bought brand new I've always looked out for cars with upgraded /long ticked options list.
I've had one or two big std stereos and lived with it conversely have had Bose system and it was worlds apart. Given I'd spend 2-3 hours every single day in the car having better quality sound is good. Even more so when the original owner took the depreciation hit for the option.

And the lovely sound of trucks passing, tyre noise, rain hitting the windscreen etc etc.At home you have to consider the neighbours and time pressures often mean you find yourself rarely sitting down to listen to music, but in a car there are fewer distractions and you can really enjoy it. A nice sounding system in a car is... nice.
But. £4K.

I think there was a £4k upgrade system available for the Range Rover. No thanks ever so much.
There is, it's closer to £5k, meridian reference system. It's awesome and I wouldn't have the car without it! If you like music, well worth the money.
think the prices are not that great value for the car systems, but a car is one of the places where you have time to listen to music and also are able to turn it up not to crazy levels but the volumes that are tough in a house.
but yes I bet there are some with 4k systems in their Porsche and sonus at home. I noticed though that few speccing up 911 GTS are getting the 4k option most are getting the 1k bose and that's on a 100k+ car so its not as many as you would think

I have a fairly high-end setup at home. I am not sure I would pay that much for an OEM option. A lot of them can be significantly out-performed by a cheaper after-market system, as long as you go to the right place.
I have an aftermarket system in my MINI (sadly I will be selling it with the MINI fairly soon). It cost a bit less than £1000, but most people who have the same system say it is much better than the HK option. A music producer said that CDs playing through it sound just the same as they do through his studio monitors. I am not sure I believe that without hearing something played through his studio monitors, but someone who had the Dolby ProLogic option in a Volvo V70 said it was better than that.
I would not spend more than that on a car audio system without a decent demonstration of it installed in the same make/model of vehicle.
I don't mind paying for things as long as I know they are better (at least to me) than the cheaper options.
