I owned Road Angels in the distant past but for the last few years have relied on the Tom Tom and annually upgraded the camera alert. To date it has been good but are there any other up to date detectors, apart from phone apps that you would recommend?

I think most of us have given up now and just rely on GPS.

Be honest, the fooking things are everywhere.

Thanks Nigel. I will just have to put up with the driverless Uber and scrap the cars.

RoadAngel Gem addict here ... still in mourning for the fabulous old Road Pilot micro (finally died in 2014, after final generous free parts from manufacturer)... Can't find better replacement that fits my needs (50k pa mainly motorway / DC use).

MK1 Eyeball!!

Seriously though, as above, the things are everywhere, apps on phones (PocketGPS), or TomTom are probably the best for fixed cameras - TomTom Live products do also use live data to warn of mobile traps but that relies on others who pass before you pressing a button to send the location to server to be distributed. I have had a few warnings of a mobile trap on TomTom app on android (motorway bridges etc) where I know they do frequent but at the time, they have left.

By the time one of the laser detectors picks up a laser, its too late.

With mobile vans, I think its just a case of keeping speed reasonable and looking ahead, not always for the speed trap itself, but the brake lights of the sheep who are probably only doing speed limit -10 mph but panic when they see a speed trap.

Have had a succession of Roadangel products, but after 3 Gem's in 1 year all failing with the same problem, as well as Roadangel's appalling customer service I've also turned to mobile phone based products. Roadangel used to be really good but there has been a change of ownership recently and something has gone very wrong during the sale & handover.

Have used TomTom and CamSam on mobile, both very similar. CamSam allows you to have a small window on top of Google Maps so that you can use both at the same time. That's on a Samsung S7, don't know if this is a Samsung thing or available across all phones.

I hear good things about Waze, but can't get on with the childish graphics.

Have used a Cheetah, OK device but doesn't do much more than a mobile based unit and need to remove from car and connect to PC for updates.

The Gem was really the perfect device as it updated via Sim, and gave you what the speed limit was where you were driving. I haven't found a comparable device yet. Unfortunately mine all stopped working after a few months with power issues.
