Can anybody recommend a Car Stereo with SatNav to fit in a single-DIN slot? Ideally it should have a flipout screen, e.g. 7-inch. I see some for sale on eBay for around the £100 mark, but I am suspicious of their quality...

Unknown make from China /ebay - what could possibly go wrong?! I bet the sellers will be rushing to help if you have issues.

Buy something from a known brand name instead.

Pioneer have released this http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/NEX/AVH... earlier this year.
It's not currently available in the U.K. at the moment, Don't know if it will be?

Hi,

As per above, the cheap unbranded units coming out of China and being flogged on ebay/amazon etc are all low quality, low reliability units and next to nil or no after sales support if it develops 'issues/problems' or indeed if it arrives with them out of the box. You 'might' get lucky and get a unit that works fully and continues to work fully longer term, so that gamble is up to you. Also, don't expect excellent or even good operation and performance, they're all made using the cheapest quality, generic internals in order to have low prices.

Pioneer have the AVH-X7800BT and AVH-Z7000 units in their lineup currently - https://www.pioneer-car.eu/uk/products/multimedia-...

Alpine and Kenwood appear not to have any, nothing in the JVC lineup, I believe Clarion are exiting the car audio market in the UK, nothing in the Sony lineup.

You could look at older used/2nd hand units?

Cheers, Dennis!

So best buy a £600 pound unit just to be sure biggrin

Perhaps get one, try it, see if it doesnt the job, if not, flog it on and buy the branded one ? suppose it depends if you can fit it.

I have used a Cheapo Chinese Double Din Android unit for a year and its been great, if you are moderately technical you can find answers, the XDA forums website has loads of info so you arent 100 percent on your own, plus they seem to just work anyway, Android is more developed than OEM software, a lot are moving to it anyway.

You get so much functionality for so little money, I have ordered another, slightly newer, higher spec one for my next car (old one is Merc specific so stays with the car) and it cost £155, plus its more flexible, dont like your nav app, install a different one.

And anyway, most do have a name nowadays, its just not obvious but there arent that many makers of them.

Here's a used Kenwood single din Nav unit I'd say these are the type of ones to lookout for.

Jesus, thats a lot of money for a second hand ten year old DVD based satnav, look at that wiring loom, you would have to be really keen on having a branded one to put all that in your car.

Fitted my new Android one in the C1 yesterday, dead easy, less than an hour to fit, all in one unit and works brilliantly, nicer than my other one, £155 and £36 for the dash adaptor, it doesnt have a DVD player, didnt use it in the other one so didnt bother. The screen is really good, higher resolution than the other one, 1024 by 600, it has 2 GB of ran vs 1 in the old one and its a later version of Android, 6 versus 4.4, you can get Android 7 ones and 8 based ones cant be far off but the seven ones were more than I wanted to pay.

I can see the snob value but these "cheapo chinese" units are way newer, easy to fit, more compact and better specs, plus they seem to work pretty well, mine even came with a manual, in English !

I've not used one myself but from friends experiences they're hit & miss some work well some don't with the branded ones they just work & while they are expensive they're around half the price of when they were new.

Seems a lot of money for some ancient tech like that ?

This new one is better than my old one, boots instantly, better screen, more ram, just plugged it in and off it went, bit of setup but it works really well, set a Spotify play list off whilst in the gym, turn the headphones off and it connects and carries on playing though the car stereo.

I am a bit of a fanboy of these things now, I just think they are brilliant value for money and havent really had to make any compromises or put up with any flakiness, Android is well developed and well supported and the hardware is pretty standard, basically a small tablet with an amplifier in and a load of sockets, they have been making stuff like this for years now and it is pretty resilient.

They dont even look too bad, I had a Kenwood one I put in my 350Z and it looked gash, it lit up like a 50s Juke Box, basically its just a screen.

Hi
U just bought one of those Chinese single din stereos and it seems to work fine only it doesn’t recognise my memeory card I put it It says it’s unsupportwd. And it won’t link up my phone book etc to iPhone Altho it does to my Samsung The mirror link doesn’t work either. I’m a complete technophobe when it comes to this stuff so is it the unit or the phones I’m using etc? And should I be able to control my music from my iPhone on the unit? As in skip play ff etc? Thanks
