They are unlikely to, because the cost of building a unit with a separate control screen is much higher than writing a custom app to allow full functionality via a phone or tablet.

Just looking more closely at this concept but using a phone or tablet with no sim that remains in the car. The question that raises is whether two devices can be connected to one head unit. Ie the permanently plumbed in one that hosts the control app while one’s real phone tethers for calls when you are in the car?

I guess I’d need to speak to Kenwood?

Just a final update, I ended up buying this thanks to your pointers. Cheap as chips, will talk to two phones and will fit in the original stereo position without needing to be reached.
