Afternoon all, just to introduce my new car, a £500 2007 Focus 1.8TDCi Zetec Estate. I saw it advertised on Autotrader last Thursday and bought it that night. I'm on my way home from picking it up at the moment. There's a few jobs need doing but for the price and age of the car it seems ok. Will post pictures later when I get in.

For £500 that looks like a bargain. Are there any issues which need addressing with it?

It needs a good valet, there's a few marks on the body which is to be expected given the age, I'm going to get the oil and filter changed, also the engine management light is on which will need investigating. It drives well so I'm guessing the EML will probably be a sensor of some description. It came with an MOT until late June next year, tyres are all ok. According to the service book the cambelt was changed in 2011 at 108000 miles, now showing just under 174000. I've done about 80 miles in it so far

Edit, forgot to mention there's only one key with it so will have to get a spare one. I'm happy with it so far.

Evening all, about 150 miles in and so far the Focus is going fine, next main jobs are to get it serviced and investigate the EML. I've just been outside changing a headlight bulb, what a breath of fresh air compared to the Fiesta, nowhere near as much of a pig of a job. Why do the manufacturers design so many cars where the front end has to be stripped down to change a headlight?

A week and about 250 miles in and so far the Focus is running fine. Does anyone know where I can get a parcel shelf from?

Normally eBay turns something up, if not gumtree or Ford breakers.

Don’t recommend Ford dealers though, they seem to be trying to charge Audi / Mercedes prices these days.

Thanks I wasn't going to go to a Ford dealer for one, only use them for parts if I have to.

Love these bottom of the market purchases, an area which I live in all the time (currently £1350 Alfa V6 and £2400 Jag XJR). Watching this thread with interest.

Reminds me of my friend's recent purchase, a Peugeot 308 derv estate which he got at auction for about £200 with over 200k miles on it. It has had nothing spent on it and he's piling on the miles with no problems so far.

There's little more satisfying than running an old derv. I miss my Pug 406 derv estate which was an outstanding car but a long MOT fail sheet meant I had to say goodbye to it.

Bloody hell, for £500 that's a tremendous bargain. Let's hope it doesn't throw any big bills in the near future.

In my experience of running higher-mileage diesels, they do seem to like oil and filter changes more regularly than the manufacturer recommends. On my 2007 320d it gets changed very 8/10k.

5w30 Mannol oil is so cheap anyway it's no great outlay.

Thanks I think it's a bargain too, I prefer it to my old Fiesta.

Really? 180k focus with the engine light on, for 500 quid?

Not thanks hehe

Thanks, it's been ok so far. It drives well so I'm guessing the EML is a sensor of some description , one of the fitters at work has said he'll plug his laptop in and see what fault code it comes up with.

Came out to the car this morning to find in the night someone had pinched a wiper blade off it. Why do people feel the need to do this?

1000 miles in and so far its fine. At some point it's been debadged which I'm not keen on, so ordered a new Focus badge which arrived yesterday so I'll be fitting it this week. I've also found out that the radio has Bluetooth on it, will have to have a play and see how to set it up.

Any other Foci on the street/neighbourhood with decidedly shift drivers?

My sympathies - drunk students attempting to out-dare each other is one thing, outright theft another.

Good luck with the wintery shedding.
