I'm toying with the idea of a touchscreen that can do DAB and also display outputs from my OBDII scanner via bluetooth, in lieu of a set of dials and gauges.

Obviously I could spend £££ on a top end unit, but as I don't want the stereo to cost more than the car ( The Blue stter ), can anyone recommend from experience one of the ebay specials that float about for £200 or so? Or even give me some insight into them?

ETA - this for example: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7-Single-DIN-DAB-Radio-...

Thanks in advance.

I was in the same boat with my shed but it's 100 percent worth getting an Android unit makes the car so much more modern feeling.

Mine is Pumpkin brand and they do a slide out single din universal one too. Mine is Vauxhall specific comes with a canbus adaptor that means steering wheels and my OEM screen work great .

Mine is octocore with 4gb ram, paid 220 on eBay .

Interesting - I feel like it's a worthy experiment, but it's still not small change to chuck away. I'm more tempted by something from a known company, but that extra £100 or so probably pushes it out of budget. That's a set of tyres!

Any other thoughts on the cheapo ebay specials?

I've used both Eonon and Seicane double DIN Android units, and they're a pretty decent all in one solution, so broadly speaking this sort of thing's worth looking at. Frankly, I think they're pretty much all made in one factory and get a differnt logo and bootup screen bunged onto them.

I'm currently investigating whether I can mildly hack about my ZS dash to get a shallow double DIN unit in without a ridiculous amount of work, but a "full depth" one pretty much 100% won't fit, there's not enough space between the heater control gubbins below and the heater vent ducting above, even if you trim out some of the material from the dash frame. But I do think you can get

I've not tried one of the flip-out units, but presumably they'd have the same kind of functionality as the others.

Another option might be a head unit that your phone clips into, like this:

Interestingly, they use an old Golf for the "fitted" shots.

The slide out ones I find far too wobbly for a useful touch screen.
The fixed ones, like merc have had for a while seem cool, if you can tolerate it permanently fixed in position.

Kind of a moot point for the OP, as I know he's moving on to a different car now, but for closing out the subject for anyone else who finds the thread in future, yes, you can do it with a low-profile head unit and some fabrication:

Generic Chinese SWM 9218 Android based head unit, about £60. Hazard and heated rear window switches from another Honda (specifically a Japanese market S-MX), with the wiring tweaked to suit the different pinouts.

Surround is modified from the standard centre console with a 3D printed mount bonded in and blended with filler, then sprayed in satin black plastidip.

Fair play - took me a minute to realise what that was in! Cracking effort.

As it happens, then new vehicle has a dodgy double din unit, so I'll be enjoying experimentation anyway.

The reason I looked for a single DIN was because the vehicle I had in mind ultimately can only have single din, but won't take an OBD adaptor so it's moot. The answer, for me anyway, is a Stack road-legal dash like you got in Caterham's of a certain age.

I bought one from China off Ebay......crap

Bought a second hand Pioneer unit for less money with a better screen and easier inputting.
