Mr Hammond plans to resign on Wednesday if Mr Johnson becomes leader
Announced it this morning. Thing is if ever there is an accurate symbol of dead man walking it's him. It has been obvious for weeks he will be sacked so why bother with his big announcement now.
It's as if he thinks it's wildly important he is seen to resign.
So he is either a pompous cockwomble with a high opinion of himself or highly principled or...……………….

Boris wouldn’t have him in his cabinet and it appears it’s a landslide Boris victory so being fired or resign it’s the same thing.

Not really, because now a transition can be planned.

Presuming Boris gets in who is likely to replace him?

The former. Just jumping before he is pushed. No principles required.

The thinking man’s (or woman) Chris Grayling.

No wonder all these no-marks were singing Boris’ praises for these last few weeks. All hoping for a decent ministerial position. The more toadyism, the better. You may not think Hammond isn’t principled but compared to what’s coming and how they’ve sold their souls to get it, Hammond is the most principled guy on Earth.

I don’t think we’ll ever see a cabinet so devoid of talent as the one we are about to get.

The high-prince of project fear?

He was going to be out of a job, regardless.

He’s done some good, undoubtedly, but he’s hugely unsuitable for a cabinet position now, as he has been since the referendum.

He’s come up as clueless, time and time again on Brexit, so it’s time to move over, I think. And I mean that with respect. Right man, wrong time.

It will be a close-run thing with the current shadow cabinet.

The recent Thatcher documentary shows that many of the current crop are a different type to those of 30years ago. Like her, loath her, or somewhere in the middle, Thatcher was definitely a leader too. She appeared to lose the plot, at some point, though.

Like them or loath them it was the decisions made by Osbourne/Cameron that moved the public finances back toward a more sustainable footing.
