Good afternoon everyone.

I have a quandary:

I have just bought 16GB (2x8) Team Group Dark Pro 3200MHz memory (on something of a whim it must be said because of its great price, although I am shopping for bits at the moment).

My problem is this:

Is this RAM compatible with a B450 MoBo? I’ve been eyeing up either a Z370 for i5-8400 or B450 for R7 2700. Now it’s definitely OK for the Z370, but I’m seeing conflicting things about the B450 (MSI Gaming Pro Carbon specifically).

I always thought that RAM is RAM and so long as the DIMM spec is the same then everything is golden.

It’s not the end of the world as I can just go down the Intel route, but I think I’d prefer the R7 2700.

TIA.

It will run but may be capped unless you go into the ram over clocking. AMD are known for having sensitivity to ram speeds. My 3400 Viper ram runs at 3200 with default config on a Zenith Extreme board. If I set it to 3400 it will not post. Instead I have to change the voltage or use XMP and even then it’s not stable so I have left it at 3200

But............ddr4 ram speeds above 2600 are a little bogus because they are all technically over clocked as the standard states 2666. Also, there’s no perceptible performance improvement over 2600. It’s all just silly waving. I certainly wouldn’t say the extra money was worth it. Especially as I bought November last year at $200 for 16gb when it’s now $80 for the same spec.

Thanks for the reply.

I have read about the 2666MHz being the ceiling for DDR4, everything over that being OC’d. So long as it’ll actually run then I’m happy with that, assuming the cap isn’t too great - as you say I can have a fiddle with the XMP and see what I can get.

I wasn’t going to get 3200 initially, however the 3000 I was going to get was £99 and the 3200 £98. Seemed silly not to. 55% percent off - bargain! Prices for RAM have dropped massively recently and were over inflated, probably why your $200 is now $80.

Lets hope graphics cards are next.
