I'm in the process of removing a very old (15 years +) Kenwood system from my Mercedes SL.
It consists of a head unit in the dash which has a screen that slides out and gives you control over the radio, multi CD changer and GPS system located in the boot. The graphics were very basic (like an old DOS program !) and it just died on me, so I'm fitting a new DAB radio/cd. I will just use my phone for SAT nav.

So I remove the head unit, at which point I notice no coax cable behind it (?). I remove CD changer and sat nav items from the boot, and proceed to remove items of the interior so can pull out the unwanted wires. I have to put the gear lever into N to remove the centre consul so the ignition key is turned on and I'm working away when I say to myself...... why can I hear the radio going ?
There must be another box hidden in the car somewhere ? It got dark at this point so I called it a night. I have all the owners books for this system and there's no mention of another box. So its more looking around, and I assume that's where the coax must be going.
I wonder what this thing will look like when I find it ? confused

Finally found it. It was a Kenwood "Hide-away" radio unit.
