i thought i had seen it all... have seen various old jags, rollers, fords and merc find their way to that great scrappy in the sky, but the last thing i thought i would ever see was a a xk120 right-royally thrashed and bashed in a banger race at this weekend's ipswich spedeweekend!!!

not sure what the going rate for one of these is in 'to be restored' condition, but i'm quite sure it's worth significantly more than the average tat that is thrown round the track!

on a more positive note, it was great to see the huge increase in historic stockcars.. these are old mg's, triumphs, ford populars etc etc which are loving stripped out, armoured and turned into full-contact racing cars... unlike the bangers, their armour ensures that they survive each race, and watching them race is very much like stepping back 30yrs in time... the competitiveness is also fantastic... they don't hold back because they are driving old cars.

stockcar racing rocks, but a xk120 sent to it's death? surely one step too far!?!

A complete basket case of an XK120 sold at Coy's a few months back for £16,500. See here:-

bds!

Why couldnt a normal person find that "whilst looking for a Rover P6", and restore it. Why these oafs?

You know they deliberately look for in tertsing, rare or unusual cars to trash 'coz is a larf innit, and it upsets people

It certainly upsets me. And look at those XJ6 in the background. Great cars, all...

Tosspots, that should've been sold to an enthusiast. They need an old primera or something, not an xk150!! Total waste.

Both a strange and stupid thing to do.

If they get their jollies from burning money let them, that car even in it's incomplete rotten state was worth a lot of money, now it's worth nothing.

It's them that's lost out no-one else. Could have sold it on and bought lots of genuine bangers.

Someone lost out through ignorance, not knowing the difference between "an old Rover" and an XK150. Rumour, on the site already mentioned, has it that they sold the scrap for £3k.

Opinion seems to suggest that not a lot of buying goes on in banger circles.

Sheer heresy perhaps, but for me an XJ6 would be the ideal car to go banger racing in. At the end of it's life it virtually has no value and you have to pay someone to tow it away. The cost of restoration way exceeds anything feasable or cost-effective so why not give it a glorious rather than inglorious final curtain? Banger racing has existed since time immemorial, and in hindsight some beautiful cars have gone that way, including a Lynx Eventer, but in the main they were cars no one wanted and on their way to the scrapyard. It would be a strange world if we had all saved our cars, wouldn't it?

Now I would have loved to take my company Marina banger racingbeer

Don't knock the racers, they can be very friendly and helpful.

While they do race some stuff that we'd like, usually if you make them a sensible offer, they'll sell the car anyway. I got my series 1 XJ6 from a racer; I've also had numerous hard to find interior trim parts, brightwork and loads of other bits from them.

There are a few out there that do deliberately pursue rare stuff, but thankfully its a minority. I'm of the mind that it's better to see the mass produced rotten cars nobody wants have one last moment of glory, rather than fading into a hedgerow somewhere at the back of a breakers yard.

Regards,

Rich

Sure banger racing bangers that would otherwise be making a oneway trip to the scrap yard is fine.
This was just wanton vandalism. Someone has money to burn and likes to do by pissing people off.

As I say, the minority. If they draw a large reaction, they do it all the more.

Indeed.
They are basically doing to try and get a reaction.

I've just had a wander around the ovalchat site, the XK150 wasn't destroyed, but it hasn't been sold either. Apparently the owner's going to race it again.

I'm not sure whether he's brave or just daft for going up against XJ's and Mk10's in that.

i guess this is no different from people using valuable cars in historic racing.

it only takes one huge crash to wreck a comnpetition car.

other peoples cars, other peoples money, if they want to banger race a xk let them, the value of all the other ones left have just gone up!

The intention in historic racing isn't to destroy the car. Very different imo.
