Completely disagree. The planning was poor.

The Audi was making good progress, the NSL signs were visible ahead & Audi was always going to accelerate. Without a significant accelerative advantage that overtake was never on.
Even if you are correct that the Audi might accelerate then the OP had a safe plan B

Without a plan B I would not have gone for the overtake

I have to agree. The attempted overtake in that location, although not terribly wrong, falls into my category of doing something that other people are not expecting, which I try to avoid nowadays.

Had you been in the NSL zone and the car in front travelling slowly or, (if you don't mind speeding) had made yourself visible in/on a fast car/motorbike that would pass easily, fair enough. as it was, the Audi may well have been intending to accelerate upon reading the NSL. Who knows?

How can you tell the Audi was making good progress? If the Audi had meant to accelerate the way he did after the OP started the overtake then the OP wouldn't have got as far alongside. You can tell by the rate that the Audi comes back at him that the Audi must have kicked down. Further the Audi drivers comments verify that he deliberately blocked the OP.

You can also see from the way the Audi drives for the rest of the vid that he is trying to keep blocking as he spends much of his time across the centre line. This is typical behavior of people trying to block overtakes.

Not overtaking because someone doesn't expect it is daft. Many drivers have no idea whats going on around them so are always surprised by overtakes. If you allow for them all, you would spend your life doing 40 is an NSL around here.

The Audi has mirrors, and I am assuming that the OP signalled etc. A diesel Mondeo isn't exactly the quickest accelerating car on the planet! Had the OP been in a 911 turbo or something fast then there may be an argument.

Audi driver was just being lazy and took offence when someone tried to pass him. Its really quite a common attitude.

Not the worlds worst overtake by the op by any means, probably not the best either. It's the sort of thing that I wouldn't go for one day, but might the next.

The Audi was definately playing silly buggers though, I could accept that he was innocently speeding up to the limit if his wheel's weren't well over the centre line and he didn't have to brake as he approached the traffic ahead. 100% small willy syndrome.

I didn't express it very well, but in effect you cant have a crystal ball and know exactly what other drivers are seeing. You can make a judgement based on vehicle positioning, anticipation, where the driver is looking etc. But certainly here in the Cotswolds there are a large number of driver who are in a world of their own. You can plan accordingly and still make a safe overtake.

I haven't prepared the video yet but I will in good time.

I was trying out my new GoPro camera at the weekend but got stuck behind a slow moving tractor on a NSL who wouldn't pull over despite the long queue and plenty of laybys.

Anyway, one or two got past on some of the shorter 'overtake appropriate' sections and at the long straight I managed to despatch a good 5 or 6 cars whilst they were left sleeping.

I have to hold my hands up though, there was a junction to a sports club on my overtake but I could clearly see nothing was there so deemed it acceptable.

The advanced driver course points out that "You must expect the other road users (drivers and pedestrians) to do the most stupid thing you can imagine, and Plan your escape route. Unfortunately a lot of folk on the road have passed the Driving Test and promptly forgotten all they learned. If we had a re-test every ten years, to keep our quality of driving up to a standard, we could then put more trust in our fellow road users and this incident would not have been a problem, the Audi driver would have been aware of the OP and let him pass. The OP had his escape plan and used it. Not sure I would stop to "Talk" to the Audi driver though!
For example while I was a driving instructor, I was taking an experienced novice, almost ready for test up to a T junction, My instructions were "At the end of the road turn right", the novice driver stopped at the give way markings, looked left and right, saw it was clear then drove STRAIGHT ON, I managed to hit the brakes before we hit a brick wall, but bounced up on the kerb.
Their excuse was "They had forgotten what they were doing for a second" You cannot relax for a minute, now with all the other distractions in the car and on the road, driving has become the last thing some people are concentrating on.

I don't think it was an unreasonable place to overtake and the OP handled the Audi driver's actions fine.

The lesson is chop your diesel saloon in for something with more power. wink

Unless that Q7 was the big petrol engine, my diesel saloon would out drag it smile

Don't think it would.

Even in 3.0tdi guise Q7's aren't slow, if it's the 4.2 oiler then you're done for.

And if the chip tuning brigade have been let loose on it then it's all over.

Oh, and did I mention the 738lbft V12 diesel Q7.......

I suspect that the Audi driver was well aware of him, and baulked him deliberately. Unfortunately, there is not yet a driving test which reliably weeds out small minded wkers.

Mine is a mapped A6 3.0 tdi. Its quicker than all but the 6l Q7. Even standard it is quicker than all but the 4.2 and the 6.0. (A6 has less drag, less weight etc)

Good grief....

4.2 diesel Q7 stats

Engine Size - 4134 cc
Cylinders - 8
0-60 mph - 6.2 secs
Top Speed - 146 mph
Power Output - 321 bhp
Torque - 760 Nm 560 lb-ft
Weight - 2450kg

I reckon in something Mondeo-sized, you would need around 250bhp to match one of these - Only one of the current-shape Mondeo range gets anwhere near (the blown 2.5L 5-pot at 7.3secs and 152mph). Of the previous shape, the hottest was the ST220, which was 7.3 seconds and 155mph).

In fact, from what I can see, the only mainstream Ford (ie not a GT) that is quicker than the 4.2D Q7 is the latest-shape Focus RS. The Q7 is actually identical in straight-line performance terms to the previous shape Focus RS, which is staggering.

Why the good grief? We are off topic but I was told that my diesel saloon probably wouldn't be quicker than a Q7, that statement is incorrect. Not talking about a mondeo, if you read the relevant posts again. I am fully conversant with the 4.2 Q7 thanks, I had one for 6 months.

I dont think it was directed at you, I think he was just impressed with the performance of the Q7 when he looked it up.

Ah ok, I see what you mean. As for the Q7 for a leviathan they are quite swift, wouldn't have another though, they are just too big

Absolutely - how can something so enormous go that fast with diesel power? The V12 is in another league altogether, with sub 6 seconds to 60 and over 160mph

I run over 400bhp from a 2-litre lump in a 1350kg car - I would have to work it pretty hard to stay with one of these

Having said that, whilst the turn of speed is impressive, its still a fugly tank and the driver in the OP is still a tw4t

I reckon this whole episode, as wkerish as it looks, is just the result of two people who are overly familiar with the road.

OP: Often held up there by traffic and knows it is a really good place to overtake so is over eager to do so and has made assupmtions about the Audi driver
Audi Driver: Is quick but respectful of the speed limits. Is sick and tired of people overtaking him at 60 in the 40 zone and then holding him up and it has just happened once too often. Although his driving is completely tttish, there was never any actual danger.

Im not defending him in the slightest, just making an observation
