Is engine braking good or bad?

I was in the UK and Belgium last November. I didn't witness too much agro towards me when slowing for villages - I don't like those flashing signboards that tell me I'm not the Messiah!

The best way to sort it all out is to go and have a drive with Andy Morrison (see HPC website). I met him for the first time then and had a great day with him.

Me again, sorry I've not responded. I am intrigued about what you do before speed limits that causes visible cursing. I'm quite interested in entering the speed limit at the limit as it were and I've never seen any visible cursing. As we are on the topic of engine braking, I was wondering if when you go from a 60 to a 30 (for example), you use engine braking from a very long way back to get to a nice 28mph at the start of the limit. That might cause the effect you describe!

No worries. You're not obliged to respond lol.

I don't do anything except for entering and exiting at the limit. That's enough most of the time. My morning commute is full of people who want to do 40-50 in a 30 so probably explains it. I don't think I reduce my speed in an unreasonable distance (my IAM associates and assessor would have picked it up otherwise) but perhaps Beds/Bucks have more speed demons.

You may well enter/exit at the limit but most don't and treat signs as the point at which you're supposed to be transitioning.

Nothing wrong with good old fashioned acceleration sense, I have to rarely apply the brakes when entering a change of limit, especially from the nationals into a 30/40 limit, with the correct planning and observatiion, coming off the gas at the right time my arrival is normally bang on the change of limit, change gear at the entry of limit, I get annoyed with myself if I have to use the brakes to get my speed bang on at the limit change.

Often come down from 6th to 5th when traffic slowing on motorway, stops all that flashing of brake lights for minor speed changes.
