I appreciate all the replies and the in-depth replies are very interesting. I have an auto so the low gear for flexibility doesn't really apply sadly. I deliberately 'looked up to my right' as I was driving up the incline to see if I could see/sense the traffic but that was useless.

I admit I did not cranked my head around when I was on the level to look at the carriageway which I normally do on slip roads. A decision needed to be made very quickly at 50mph (I think I had maybe 2 seconds) and as I had visibility in my wing mirror I was about to abort the merge due to the car in lane 1 until he flashed me out.
Surely you have the ability to hold or engage a low gear in an auto? What car is it?
I think you need to judge the main road speed as you approach the entry, match it, then adjust up or down to slot in.

At 5.20 on this video the instructor avoids using the slip road I'm referring to, calling it 'extremely tricky'.

It's nice the old boy found a way to get out and about.

This, or an excuse to use the kick down!

It's a Polo 1.4 DSG inherited from the mother in law, sorry not very exciting smile

The car doesn't matter.

It really doesn't.
Indeed. OP should practise with the DSG to ensure he can hold a lower gear to accommodate that slip-road. Try an empty fast flat road to start with.

I’d be fairly confident at matching my speed and deciding what to do, even if I had to stop, when using that slip road.
What would concern me would be some moron slamming into the back of me at 50mph as, you know, ‘slip road’ which obviously means ‘barrel down it’ and expect everyone to give way to you.

It’s a poor design.

I use this slip road regularly. If iapproach end of slip at 30 in third and check door mirror in good time i have always had enough time to either slow to let someone pass or accelerate into a safe gap.

If you find it intimidating to use this slip road then keep left to the traffic lights then drive straight across at lights onto the second slip which has a much longer approach to the d/c.

I forgot to mention that this second slip road has a n/s/l (70).

If you are forced to stop on the short slip road, use 'hazard lights' and stop on left side of slip road.
