This morning I came up behind a Land Rover Discovery doing a little over 50 on an NSL single carriageway, I was on a bike but not sure if this is relevant. It was a long straight road with nothing coming the other way so once I was past some entrances I moved offside and was just about to accelerate when the Discovery's right hand indicator came on.
yikes

So I didn't overtake........

There was certainly no entrance on the right so I thought maybe he was avoiding something on the left that I 'd missed. But there was nothing there and he didn't move out or do anything other than carry on in the same part of the lane at the same speed.
Half a mile later I did overtake him, he didn't show a signal or react in any way.

What was going on?

Did he judge that first overtake I considered to be unwise and decide to put me off? But there was actually a longer view ahead than the place I did overtake.

Perhaps he disapproved of me overtaking when he may well have had 55 on his speedometer, admittedly I might not looked to overtake a vehicle at that speed on that road if I hadn't known that speed traps were very unlikely for the next few miles. But why no reaction when I did overtake?

Perhaps the signal was actually due to an intention to move out to the right, which he abandoned when he saw me offside. But then why would he want to move and why not move anyway once I'd pulled back behind him?

Maybe he was signalling for you to pass but mistakenly activated the offside indicator instead of the nearside one.

I accidently gave someone a facefull of main beams whilst looking for the windscreen washers the other day. I shouldn't worry about it.

Well yes. That's why I might not have bothered to overtake if I wasn't intending to got a bit over NSL.

I'd guess he was being an ass or genuinely thought you were about to perform a poor overtake. As others have said, you did your bit so no biggie. smile
