Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere already but after doing my IAM some time ago, I can't help feeling this tragic accident could've been avoided. Naturally the focus has been on the pedestrian who caused the accident but obviously the car was a factor too.

I'm not blaming the driver but a few things stood out to me from that video.

1. Whilst not really narrow, a cyclist passing a pedestrian on a pavement would've flagged as a potential hazard upon approach.

2. I'd have slowed and assessed the oncoming traffic to see if I could've given more room for the cyclist.

3. Just because a cyclist is on a pavement, it doesn't mean there's no need to give them space.

I do this routinely for anyone on the pavement, dog walkers especially but it was drummed into me that you assess all potential hazards and adjust accordingly. I'm happy to be corrected but this sad incident seems to highlight the contrast in driver perception when a cyclist is on the road or pavement.

Thanks for the video which I had not seen. Well done on your observations. I hope I would have moved a little away from the pavement. However, I don't think the catastrophe could have been avoided. The cyclist probably fell pretty much half way across the road and the traffic is not moving fast. Depending how close the car which hit the cyclist was when the cyclist fell there may have been absolutely nothing the best AD could have done.

Did the woman push the cyclist?

Was it right to put her in prison (sentenced to three years I believe)?
