Modern cars for several years have been fitted with asymetric headlights which do not dip to one side, they dip down, giving an even beam to both sides.

on the continet, yes. UK cars still have a left focus beam.

...and according to my observations the RH dipped beam normally has a sharper cut-off (shorter range) than the LH dipped beam. This reduce the risk of the RH headlight upsetting oncoming drivers, while at the same time the LH dipped beam is directed more towards the N/S pavement/grass verge etc.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

I guess it depends on what car you drive then.
We have a 2001 Peugeot 406 and a 2003 VW Passat and on both cars the beam is totally asymetric.
My 2000 TVR Chimaera however uses the old type headlights so I will need to tape these up for France. I shall use some black tape/stanley knife to do this.
I'm not paying loadsamoney for a "kit" from Halfords.

Keith, I'd use the beam bender type (the clear ones) that way you don't loose light
