There have been a couple of Green ones for sale recently, with a similar spec to the red one above, for 5.5k. Still unsold on the bay.

There's a Gul Yellow one on there now for 6.5k.
Olive Green for 4295
Olive Green for 5995
Grey for 2750 obo

Red one with 88k for 6k!

I think 8k is a tad bit optimistic IMHO.

They're all auto's, bar the Green car which needs a bit of attention with the hoover.

The auto can't take much power- they overheat at around 300 bhp, so a very limiting factor in these cars.

But I take your point- I'm happy to keep it, just fancied a change.

I just took a better look at the only manual on eBay (the green one) and it's absolutely miles behind in terms of spec.

Values for decent T-5R and 850R seem to be all over the place at the moment, several low mileage Japanese import T-5R's in "that yellow" seem to have gone for strong money.

I'm wondering about this as I have an 850R and wish to either switch it onto an agreed value policy (currently Elephant will give me £500 for it), or possibly sell it.

How, short of actually selling it, to establish what it's worth?

180,000 miles, engine fully rebuilt 20,000 of those ago with a ported head, H-beam rods, back-cut valves etc.

The car has had what I'd term sympathetic upgrades - AP made a big brake kit for these cars which it has, it's got the R manifold, year old 20T turbo, full Ferrita downpipes/100 cell cat/cat-back system and is breathing through a custom MAF, enlarged throttle body and uprated Intercooler.

Suspension wise that's all new, Koni yellows at the front and year old Nivo's at the rear.

So it stops, turns, and will go - depending on the dyno you favour you'll see 350-370 bhp.

Within the last couple of weeks I changed the windscreen, all seals, and had a major service done with all belts, fluids and filters.

= It's worth more than the £500 I'd get if it got T-boned, I believe.
Did you sell this is in the end?

I actually spent another £2,000 on it since that photo was taken, and I put the add up.

It may be that I'm not terribly clever, but equally I've never accepted that things shouldn't be in perfect condition.

Next time I'm not likely to get a bunch of small things fixed at the Volvo main dealer though - the bill was rather a surprise.

What did you get done? I'm surprised you didn't send it to Tim

I sent it to Doves in Croydon, didn't have the time to take it up to Leicester, and it was a load of small jobs - stuff like a fresh tailgate fixing pack, plus labour to fit, a new side-light, a CV boot which had a small tear in it and was eye-waveringly expensive etc etc.

Then it had a full detail including ceramic coating - multiple layers of ceramic coating actually, which makes it bead comically in the rain, I'll find the picture.

Hah, interesting that you say that - recently people have been reacting really positively/strongly to the car, waving, coming over to talk about it etc.

I half thought that a TV show had started using one, such was the attention.

I just think they are coming of age now and emerging from the darkness. It's been like it for a while with the 240 but the 850 is now getting to that age where you don't see so many.

The amount of "my dad/granddad had one of those" conversation starters I've had is huge.

Stunning car.

Sometimes I regret selling my past 850's and investing in a P2 instead... though the latter is fantastic too.

Would gladly change it for a very nice example 850 R or T-5R however.

Thanks!

I had a chap honking is horn (in a friendly way) and waving at me today - I thought I'd left my coffee on the roof, but as I got closer he shouted "nice car!"

I'm honestly a bit taken aback by the (very sudden) increase in this sort of attention. At least it is all positive!

They have seen a massive surge in value of late and I guess that puts them under the noses of those who perhaps wouldn't have given them a second glance a couple of years ago. I've had a few R models and up until my last Gul and to an extent, the Saffron V70R that followed... none of my car mates gave any of them much interest. Slightly different story with the last two, probably due to them being "old" by today's standards and also given most 90's performance cars are rocketing in value.... I guess anything of that era now gets more attention from blokes of a certain age group!

I find myself browsing daily... as loud, obnoxious and in your face as my Gul was, part of me does wish I'd kept it.

Hindsight eh!

True. I'm getting to the point where I don't want to use mine for what I need - predominantly driving to Heathrow and leaving in the car park for two weeks - as I don't want other people parking next to it/the car being covered in sand.

Ultimately I think I need to get a car I'm less precious about!

It still scrubs up well:

Currently in discussions with a chap who is interested in buying the car, but he's in no hurry and I'm continuing to use the car.

I dropped it off at Volvo Croydon to have a four wheel alignment done as I'd noticed when coming home earlier in the week that the wheel was slightly cocked to the right.

Volvo happily obliged (£151) but have also sent me an email saying that the track rods and track rod ends were "frozen, we released them but you should replace them in our view", so that's happening as well. I currently don't know how much that's going to cost.

Every time I fix something I wonder whether selling it is the right thing to do, but as it gets older and more valuable I also feel guiltier about leaving it in Heathrow long-term parking for two weeks.

I was just about to post and say I had seen it in the service car park at Croydon Volvo - I did a double take! It looks fantastic.

Doves Volvo, Croydon, have my Volvo at the moment- I'm collecting it tomorrow.

They've just sent me the following:

"Dear Dammit,

We have recently received an enquiry into Doves Volvo for a potential customer wishing to purchase a used Volvo 850 R, very similar to your model and specification.

Therefore, we would like to purchase your vehicle and are willing to give you an exceptional price for it to fulfil the enquiry.

We will of course be able to offer you preferential terms in changing into a brand new or used model if you are able to help us."

Who wants to guess what they'll offer?

Collected the 850 this morning, apparently the email I received is from the general manager of the dealership, but he wasn't in so I didn't get to speak to him.

His offer remains a mystery!
