I've a hankering for an XC90 and its not going away. If anything knowing child number 2 is on the way the want is getting stronger. What is wrong with me?!

I think its about time you actually bought one and got it out of your system!!

How many years have you been waiting to get one now? hehe
laugh

Thing is I really like the V70 but when there are two child seats in the back, 3 dogs and a pushchair, taking other people in the car will start getting tricky. Utterly daft reasoning.

Indeed it does, but I couldn't spend 10k on a car. 4/5k maybe.

Big balls required.

Dont bother with a £5k XC90. Unless you are lucky itll end in tears. Think Citroen and remind yourself about needlessly changing vehicles wink

Your current R is a lovely thing and wont be bettered for the money smile
I feel you are probably right. Might just be a bit of a squeeze on the occasions we need to take someone else out.

Buy one - for what they are designed for they are great cars biggrin

However don't mess about with the V8. It's not a sports car, wasn't designed to be one and never will be. Get a D5 and accept slowing down for corners. They can still cruise at decent speeds.

We've done 80k miles in ours (it's done 90k total). Outside of consumables it's cost us less than a grand (steering wheel clock spring and rear wheel bearings). Ours is a 2010 model. I believe these and all facelift cars were more robust.

Also, if kids and dogs are involved, forget white seats!!

We regularly use all 7 seats and it still has plenty of boot space for beach gear etc etc. I can't think of much/anything else that can do that as well.

Have been looking into replacing ours with a new one, but at the moment the cost to change just doesn't make sense. Maybe in a year or two.

Looks good.

When we bought ours I was thinking this sort of level. Then my other half sat in a 2010 R-design and got all Hyacinth on me.

Still, it gave me good bargaining power when looking for a 2nd 4x4 smile

I would check when things like wheel bearings were changed, and would also have the 4wd system checked out. If all that looks good, get it bought!

Sends a shudder down my spine
Bought one in 2004 as a 'new family' car. I have to say it was absolutely awful, build quality was terrible. I asked garage to fix some interior trim issues under warranty and it got returned with some self tapping screws holding part of the consul in place! That aside it drove like a bag of spanners and you would have to predict gaps in traffic as turbo lag was scary, made worse by the fact that sometimes it would actually pull away quite well!
Sorry I don't like them - no idea what year £5k buys you but if it is anywhere near 2004 run away, other wise I fear you will regret it. Based on other comments it sounds like any Mechanical work can be expensive and just don't think it is worth it ... sorry

Ive had a few volvos in my time,850/s80/v70`s and my neighbour decided to buy a 2010 xc90 diesel with approx 70k miles..Warranted for 1 year by parkside volvo and just out of warranty the turbo went, gearbox started leaking fluid all over the drive too and quoted just shy of £5k to fix.My local garage put on a used turbo and sorted the leak for far less and so far its fine..but hes lost confidence, shame as its a lovely looking thing..

I've been thinking about an XC90 for a few years - wifey currently has a 2003 Kia Sorento which she treats as a skip - but with a 4th kiddie on the way only the XC90 really appeals.

Unfortunately having lots of kids means my wife's job is looking after them all and therefore we don't have lots of money - so as my bro is selling his long time 2003 one for £3000 I am tempted to take a chance - wish me luck...

With winter tyres on, and a fully functioning 4wd system, they handle bad weather well (though as you note there hasn't been any for years!).

The diffs on pre-2007 (I think) cars are weak, but believe that's been covered on the thread. Wheel bearings seem to need doing at 80k-100k miles and aren't cheap parts.

I've heard the T6 has other gremlins too. Wouldn't know as we have a D5.

Fairly sure the early parts of this and other quite recent threads cover most pitfalls.

I have had mine since new (10/2009) and its been great- the fuel gague packed up early on and because there is not a Volvo dealer here on the IOW I never bothered to get it sorted under warranty and it seems a faff to do - sensor was replaced something to do with oil level a couple of year ago - it had 3 services as part of it service pack with Volvo and a good mate has done it since - I am only on 56k but its the best family car and I use it to tow the Caterham to trackdays and its superb for that.

To be fair then - thats not a whole lot of Borkage for a large 'exec' type car.
Ours has been great. Rear wheel bearings and steering wheel clock spring the only things out of usual consumables to be replaced thus far.

But....

Ours is a 2010 and it's a D5. I've heard the petrol ones have more issues (engine aside I can't think why they would be though) but have definitely heard older ones are more trouble prone (pre-07 I think).

On the flip side, ours has done 95k miles.
