Greetings!

We are having to consider the possibility of a 7 seater........With this in mind I have started to look around at XC90s (as this is our preferred 7 seater).

Now my question is, with a very small budget (less than £6000) - is this a good idea? Will we buying a whole load of trouble? Reading around, many would suggest this will be the case!

Your thoughts please!

There's been a similar thread quite recently...I think the answer is "maybe".

Everybody likes a story filled with woe, pain and negativity... you rarely hear of those cars that have proven to be brilliant.

They have their issues and they can be quite expensive to put right - just like the vast majority of modern cars out there.

Gearboxes seem to crop up on a regular basis, but that also applies to several Volvo models.

Perhaps one with an aftermarket warranty applied would give a little more peace of mind and security?

Guys, I bought one on Friday for just over 2 grand (54 plate, 240k miles on the clock, cat D). Drove it straight back home from Merseyside (200+ miles) and all weekend. Everything works and its lovely on a run. Having seen Chris Harris last week I have a lot of confidence this has another 250k in it. Time will tell! Shall I start a blog?!

You are braver than me. My budget started at £3.5k and crept up to double that. Got this one for £6.5k

I bought my bro's 2003 145k mile D5 XC90 off him a month ago for £2750.

On the way back up north I discovered it needed a new rear caliper, then it kept going into limp mode a few hundred yards up the hill every morning on the school run, oh and a week later the ABS warnings started popping up - they are on permanently now......

The limp mode issue disappeared after a long run and/or the weather warming up and I'm hoping the errors are an ABS sensor or reluctor ring that failed due to the binding caliper overheating the wheel.

So er, there is potential risk involved.

Has the battery ever been flat and needed a jump start? Apparently, Volvo ECUs don't like it.

So far the biggest crisis has been my wife trying to connect her phone to the parrot to get the music to work. I'm hoping things stay this quiet. Planning on self servicing though and I can't believe the cost of doing it DIY for all the filters and oil alone! They like the black stuff these cars don't they?!
