We currently have an old 2003 Punto for a second car to use to and from work...

I have a feeling that said Punto is going to be due a massive bill before too long and make in uneconomical to repair and run.

I have been offered a 2003 V40 Sport 1.9D on 82k. Full and decent service history, Cam Belts and bushes recently changed. Clutch hasn't been done and at this milage I would imagine it will need one before too long.

I have been offered it from a bloke in work who has always looked after his vehicles.

I am half tempted to buy it and replace the junk that is the Punto. Anything i need to be looking out for when I give it a look over. Any known issues etc.

Thanks,

I have an 03 s60 D5

£800

No experience of s40’s but an old neighbour had one and loved it.

That’s not strictly true, 18 months ago one T boned me at 70mph.

Smashed to pieces but both occupants got out without assistance or serious injuries

Tough car

I bought a nearly new 1997 V40 and ran it for 17 years, 2.0lt petrol and still good. The sills started to rust and also the original steel brake pipes. Given the high mileage it wasn't economical to repair, so replaced it with a 2001 V40 90,000mls. Bought blind off ebay for £800 and it has turned out superb. Now on 127,000mls and feels like a new car. For the money you will not find a better model and the car that has been offered to you is one of the most desirable variants of the V40.

That is dirt cheap for one with 82k. Buy it. No reason why it would need a clutch - the only thing which can sometimes go is the dual mass flywheel but if it is not making a horrible noise it should be OK.

I've had two v40s both 2l petrol, driven 250,000 miles between them, great cars in terms of reliability, not what you'd call exciting or charismatic but also cars, you should be ok with one on that mileage, they do go through front wish one bushes fairly quickly but their isn't many other common issues.

I had a v40 1.9d 2004 for 7 years, clutch lasted to nearly 200000 miles and turbo went at 226000 miles, sold it last year but its still knocking around and according to the mot check site its currently on 246000 miles, so go for it
