Hi everybody,

I have very troubling issue with my v70.
It takes a lot of oil and the fuel consumption is worse than before.

More to the point. it has 171k on the clock, now I can do around 300miles and I need to add at least 1l of oil.
Initially was on 0w-30 and I have done about 40k on it with not a single issue changed it around 10-12k.

However since it started to take oil around June (1l per 1-1,3k), I moved to 5w-30, even to 10w-40!
There is absolute no leaks, dripping etc, coolant is clear, Performance wise is fine as long as DPF was burned out (very often trough computer). No smoke behind it (guess that is down to the DPF).
Stockport independent Volvo specialist said to check the turbo. So I had it checked and regenerated as controller motor was no that well. At the same time soaked the DPF in diesel over 2 days, pressure washed after that. A lot of black deposits came off, and ashes (pink to beige dust). Everything assembled and back on 0w-30.

It was smoking like volcano for a while, and it stopped. Thinking that it had to clear the exhaust system.
No improvement in the performance, except mpg went up to 36 from 29. However, nowhere near as before 40+.

Yesterday, got a message that there is not enough oil. my mechanic has no idea what it may be to take that much oil and how to check it.

Last month he checked the compression and it was 26-26 on edge cylinders and 25.2-25.5 on remaining three cylinders.

I am desperate to find what is going on, and my wallet is drained empty before Christmas because of that.

I had to burn out the soot in the DPF so many times that I have lost the count. Every time crating a blue smoke screen around me.
Please advice there to look.

I have found similar thread but no answer to me in it.: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Pio

I mean, you're losing oil and your DPF is getting annihilated.
Given compression is good, I think that means you can rule out the piston rings.

Therefore, is it worth investigating the turbo? Perhaps a seal there is going & it's leaking the oil out? Could be worth opening it up to assess, surely if there's that much of a leak it'll be pretty wet with oil.

Hi Thank you for your reply.

I had my turbo regenerated just over week ago, so it's not the issue. I was leaking but very little according to the specialist garage.

Given that the compression is fine would it be pistons rings?
Regards,
Pio

P.S. I got DPF full message again now. It will be full of oil I guess...

What exactly does turbo regeneration entail? Did they actually take it off or take it apart?

Also, you should check out this thread on the volvo forums, it sounds very similar to your problem:

My 'low oil level' warning message popped up for first time ever this morning. Checked dipstick and its right at the bottom of the XXXXs. Normally it sits around half way up the XXXXs between oil changes and maybe rises if anything due to diesel dilution. What worrying me a bit is I've just calculated the MPG over the last full tank (500miles full-to-full on phone app) and its tumbled from the usual 37ish to 32, but with no change of driving from the usual 55mile daily motorway round trip. Will be keeping an eye on this.

PS Car is V70 D5 2007 Mk3 with ~125k miles.
