The Volvo forums are a bit livelier than here - https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/ - so you might get more input over there.
I don't believe the engines are Ford based, but could be wrong. tbh it's not something that bothers me in the slightest. Ours is a diesel in a family wagon. The engine does what it's meant to so am happy
The one thing to watch out for are hoses. Ours has had a couple of turbo hoses come adrift/break. All sorted under warranty, but is a pain in the rear. This time they have told us the ones going on are an updated spec so should be fine. We'll see - car's out of warranty now but will be having words if we get another failure (car still drives OK, just feels less responsive and makes a loud hissing noise).
Hybrids? Volvo's plan is that all new cars will be electric or hybrid from this year. I suspect that means new models, but I would be shocked if the XC40 didn't get at least a hybrid version.
My in laws have been VAG people through and through but love ours. XC40s are too new for discounts and hence quite expensive at the moment, but think they'll get one before too long. And they like a nice car inside.
IME spec makes a big difference in Volvos. e.g. our XC90 has the nappa leather option and it really lifts the cabin (though haven't spent significant time in an XC90 not equipped with it to be fair).
I reckon they are at least a match for Audi/Merc/BMW/Discovery. With the spec on ours I don't think a Range Rover would feel better. But Volvo's do feel different IMO. Softer, more relaxed somehow.

How relaible are these newish Volvo's, and are the engines Ford? Not had many issues with recent VAG cars, plan would be to keep for 4/5 years.
Is there any plan to bring out a hybrid version in the next year or 2?

I’ve seen a few of these and I like the look of them.
Are they a genuine luxury car or just a nice car? I like it’s size

Other Volvos (XC90/XC60) , Porsche Macan, VW Tiguan and Lexus RX450h. Also Mercedes GLC, Audi Q3, Jaguar E-PACE and F-PACE.My in laws have been VAG people through and through but love ours. I am hoping that the XC40 would feel as premium as an XC90 with the lovely blond leather and wood. Is it?
I haven’t seen many Inscriptions, not keen on the R-Design model. I like small wheels, a quiet petrol engine, light colours with light interiors. People who buy Macans seem to lack taste since i just saw one that was Gold with a ugly (not rich) brown leather, the ugliest wood ever and baby st coloured dials. VW Tiguans are scarce in leather. Jaguars also seem to have the faux-sporty disease. Mercs are OK but look a bit pants in alcantara. Lexus is drab. So far i like the Q3 and Volvo.
I’m not even going to consider BMW as how people think the new models (bar the 5 series) are “premium” is beyond me. They look extremely cheap and old inside and the X5 i sat in was horrid. Somehow tacky and cheap feeling at the same time.

Not sure unfortunately.I am hoping that the XC40 would feel as premium as an XC90 with the lovely blond leather and wood. Is it?...
I just had a look at their configurator and they don't seem to not nappa leather on the XC40...and choice of inlays seems very limited to me (we have dark flame birch in our XC90 and they look fantastic with a blond interior...but not available even on the XC90 now).
We’ve had our XC40 for three months now, a lowly T3 but perfect for tootling round town with the occasional long trip. We’re 3k in and we’re getting 38mpg real, (trip claims 39!). It’ll handle longer trips without fuss, sitting happily at a suitable cruising speed on the A1 for a Cambridge to Hull and back day trip- the seats are Volvo standard, very good!
Holy thread resurrection batman .....
Time to change my BMW 1 series and been to the Volvo dealer today. Really like the XC40 R-Design so test driving a T4 AWD tomorrow.
Anyone got any up-to-date experience or comments? Looks like there’s hardly any discounts being offered based on the sales guy but would be good to understand if that’s true or not.
Drive the deal gets a 7.5% discount but I’d have to sell my BMW privately which I don’t fancy doing at all.

We have a First Edition T5. 2 years old now and 23,000 miles on the clock. Have also had the Polestar upgrade. It's quick! Thirsty though especially on local trips when the mpg is around 23 to 26 mpg. Better on long trips when it gets upto mid 30's. Average over life of the car so far is 27 mpg. It's meant to go back in 12 mths time but struggling to think of what to replace it with. The First Edition is fully loaded and the tech is great especially once you get used to using the voice activation.
