Sensus and CarPlay - features

I've got my new S90 arriving next week, and I'm trying to decide if I need the specific CarPlay feature enabled or not (extra £300). There's some suggestions that Siri works without CarPlay, but it's not clear.

What you do/don't get with the standard Sensus interface compared to adding CarPlay? Siri, notifications, etc...

I had a play around with a non car play xc60 at the weekend. Two methods of use Bluetooth or usb. You can still use voice commands but I didn’t try Siri and dont think you’ll be able to listen to texts and reply. However I have decided against it as feel the system is fine and given the CarPlay screen is only half of the sensus screen it’s not worth it for me.

I’ve had CarPlay for 2.5yrs in my current car and don’t rate it too well anyway. Hated Apple maps. If the car has sat nav it’s not worth the extra IMO. It feels as though CarPlay isn’t being developed well

The car will read texts out to you anyway. I'm not convinced of the wisdom of replying to them whilst driving.

The car also has OK VR for main functions too.

We have CarPlay in ours. Never use it. No need at all in our experience.

Agreed about not texting replies! My mate's Skoda reads texts out and he can reply via voice (Siri?) so I'm hoping I can do the same without needing CarPlay specifically. Will find out next week

You can't do it with the built in Volvo software.

CarPlay is fine for the cars I have driven with a screen but no satnav but it’s not neccesarry for cars with a decent infotainment system.
