Volvo V70 - 2003 - flat battery

There are a number of threads about this issue on the internet but a lot seem to die before being concluded or just contain guesses without any confirmation.

My father owns a 2003 V70 T5 which he has let the battery go flat on. Central locking via the fob doesn't work, driver's door lock serves only to activate the central locking (which isn't working due to a lack of power) and there is no manual lock on the boot.

Does anyone have any suggestions on getting in / charging it? Suggestions online are to break in via the drivers door (wire or something to pull door handle) but I'm unsure if the door will open if it's locked? Or to lift the front of the car, remove some plastic under the engine and jump the engine via the starter.

Both options are a pain due to lack of knowledge or tools, any suggestions? There is plug for a trailer hook up, can the central locking be powered through that?

Battery is under load bay floor next to spare wheel well. There is also a positive terminal for jump starting next to the fuse box under the bonnet.

Personally I would jump start the thing using the positive terminal post in the engine bay and the negative jump lead attached to a solid metal part of the engine , let it charge for a bit and then see if the battery is goosed. There shoud be a indicator o the top of the battery, green is good, white is bad.

First bit of bad weather of the winter does seem to herald battery failure.
