Hello all,

Since having a V90 Cross Country on a lease I've became a bit of a Volvo fanboy and given the lack of lease deals at the minute I'm considering buying second hand. The reason for looking at the above is I like to have some light off roading ability.

I'd have another V90 CC like everything about it expect the economy relative to the performance I've never found great.

I test drove a B5 XC90 while mine was in for a service. Liked it, I don't need 7 seats and it will be used mostly on local A and B roads for the school run so it's potentially too big for the majority of what it will get used for, however I really like them so need to talk myself out of it.

The XC60 seems like a good compromise however the boot seems smaller than the V90. We make regular 6 hour trips up to the North West coast of Scotland to visit family, so with 2 kids need a decent boot. Could compromise and invest in a roof box. Out of all the cars I've owned the V90 has easily been the most comfortable for this and other trips. I'm 6'4" and find it's like driving in an armchair.

Can anyone comment on ownership of these? Just starting to compare second hand values of each.

I've had a couple of XC60s and now a 2018 XC90. Also a Volvo fanboy now.

We've done family trips with 2 kids in both and the XC60 coped for a weeks skiing (without our own skis admittedly) on several occasions but we were packed tight. XC90 obviously has tons more room and feels lighter and more airy inside.
The downside to the XC90 is that it is a big lump to park. In hindsight we should have gone for the 360 camera.
Ours is a D5 and returns around 40mpg when not doing just town driving.

Probably best to try one of each for size

After many years of leasing, just bought an XC90 T8 - similar profile to OP, lots of 'out of village' round trips of <=20miles then a few big trips to Yorkshire from Wiltshire with lots of gear. Currently sat in Scarborough (in the rain) with all our wetsuits, bodyboards an other crap (including two 6ft boys) which fitted in the car with room to spare, this was great as usually a struggle. Previous car was a V90 T4 lease.

>>>Why? <<<
Massive boot space, reclining rear seats
20 miles (max) EV range which is actually just possible (9.2kwh battery on mine)
£0 RFL - mine reg. March 2017 - April 2017 on there is money to pay (but also slightly better spec.)
Our trip profile suits hybrid (not a hybrid fan per se)
Not a diesel, so no DPF EGR which are killed by our short trip profile
We have a charge point in drive from previous BMW i3
Plan to own for 4/5 years and reliability seems decent on these (fingers crossed on ERAD)
V90 lease made me a massive fan of current Volvo
Love all the Volvo tech in particular the self drive on M-ways
T8 has glass roof, 4 zone AC and remote heating as standard
Remote access, control app and in built wifi [bought a £45 Three data sim that just popped in]
After each Volvo franchised service you get 12 months of Volvo assist breakdown cover (just discovered this) full roadside assistance at home and onward travel/accommodation!
Fairly nippy with combined 400bhp

>>>Experience - bought Friday drove to Scarborough Monday - 280 miles one way <<<
Tanks is 50ltrs on my model (bigger for 2018 model year)
Trip average was bang on 35mpg - 'saved' battery charge to use when bumbling around locally
Got to destination on single tank with 80 miles petrol range left -
Super roomy and relaxing with Pilot assist auto drive -
Kids happy in back and even made use of heated rear seats (this and factory towbar were hard to find options)
Made use of a very wet day and activated [dead] Volvo on Call that allows iPhone app to see and control range, door locks, cabin pre-heating etc. Volvo Malton helped and awoke the Comms unit and all connected perfectly. They charged me £0 for this help! I had to nerd out to get this going, not a smooth process!

>>> Verdict so far... <<<
Big thumbs up - first non-lease in years and did miss the new car smell, will give it a proper valet on return but other than that that I highly recommend the T8 XC90!

We're on our 2nd XC90.

1) 2018 D5 Inscription Pro. Ran this for about 2 years and 29k miles. Averaged about 29mpg overall (circa 35mpg on a run but poor around town).

Loved the car but it was let down by the engine (rattly and unresponsive after my previous Jag XF S), poor stereo and lack of air con to the 3rd row.

2) Replaced it in March this year with a T8 Inscription Pro with the Polestar kit. It goes very well indeed, also went for the mid-range stereo (Harmen Karden) and being the T8 it has the comfort pack which gives ventilation to the 3rd row).

Both cars had the Xenium pack which gives you the glass roof and the 360 cameras (a must have IMO)

Currently averaging 36mpg after 4,000 miles, it will do around 20 miles on pure electric taking around 6hrs to charge (via a 3pin plug) - we changed electric suppliers to octopus agile to make use of the off peak electric rates for charging. On a run we get around 27mpg (but i don't hang about).

It's a deceptively quick car - i had no issue keeping up with a C63 AMG the other week despite having 3 kids + the dog + luggage for a week in the car.

Old one:

New one:

The other thing to note, there is limited colours with certain colours only available in certain trims. Having had the massage seats in the black one we stayed with the Inscription Pro spec rather than going to R-Design Pro which gives a 'sportier' look

Thanks for the replies. You've not helped as the XC90 T8 is the car I really want but keep talking myself out it by the fact its too much car/money so I've been looking at the XC60 T6 recharge as a compromise.

Think you may have sold me on getting the T8 so will look for some slightly used examples and get some quotes. Cheers
