Hello all!

Purchased myself a 2006 v70 D5 (183?) with the 6 speed box. Given it a full service, rear brake discs and a calliper, new handbrake shoes... Drives great, gearbox is nice and smooth, really happy.

At the time I thought this is the highest milage(140k) I have every purchased but now think it was the best 2k I have ever spent!

So only thing I haven't done is gearbox oil, which I read is important to get life out of the box? Have read this is stronger box than the 5 speed? how much oil do I need? have searched for a few hours last night and cannot find much for the 6 speed.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Hi Buddy,

Ive got a 2004 S60 D5, its the older 5 speed box and ive changed my fluid 3 times.
It takes around 12 or so litres to do a flush and although my box was fine before hand it felt even better once the fluid was changed.

Its worth doing for sure, make sure its the correct spec. You can get a 20L mini drum for about 50/60quid of ebay and gee the green clip which is on your oil return pipe going into your rad along with the two oring washers. This is normally a Volvo dealer part will cost you about £20.

if you go to the volvo forum you will find loads of topics on this - essentially the wisdom is to NOT drain the whole box, but to drain what comes out of the gearbox sump, measure it - and put the same amount of the correct spec fluid back in thru the dipstick aperture.

Drive for a certain period, and repeat.

drive for a certain period and repeat.

etc

this is definitely worth doing some research before doing this - but yes it has to be done - especially if the car has had a hard life with regard to towing etc..
