I may walk away if they don’t get the MOT done. They said they would try. I will give them till the end of the week. Trouble is finding one. As people seem to want a premium for them I’ve only got around £2000 to £2500 to spend.
You've come asking for advice. We've all told you to walk away. Why ask advice if you're going to ignore it?

Must it be a V70?
I know of a couple of Estates that might be a far better proposition for your budget.
Doesn’t have to be a V70. It’s for a family member for work. They just like them.
If you want to email me through my profile I’ll let you know if a couple, one in particular should be perfect.

He hasn't ignored it. He's said that they are rare in his budget. He has said he may walk away if they don't MOT it.

In all likelihood the car will fail, and expensively. The vendor knows this and is trying his luck.
The buyer is looking for a difficult car to find, and understandably doesn't want to just give up on this one. Although, I'd be very very wary of this one.

Because of the rust? They are hard to find and people want a premium for them.
Because its a 16yr old car that will cost £500+ a year to get through its MOT.

People have a weird rose tinted view of V70s. They are ongoing money draining tools.

Mine isn't.

Any car can be, but also they are great solid cars if you get a good one.

Based on owning several V70's of that era... yes I agree that corrosion can be an issue given its age however it's not to be expecoected. They're generally rather rot resistant however this Volvo rose tinted bks that they don't rot is exactly that. Bad, neglected ones rot and I'd echo what's been said... a P2 V70 that needs welding isn't a good one, there will be cars out there without rot so I'd strongly advise finding one. The sills and strut towers are the key areas and can see a V70 headed for scrap if they're going here.

£2500 is not a meagre budget for a V70 even in current climates and yes, finding a specific one may take patience or a bit of travelling but to get a good one, it'd be prudent to do that. They're not as solid as people think... get one that's tired, neglected and in need of a big spend is a brutal proposition and there's plenty of those given many are run as sheds / on a budget of 47p a year. Equally an average one could chip away at the budget month on month as things wear with age hence I'd check, check and double check before handing over cash and be realistic that like any car, it'll need love and attention.

Buying a tired, baggy one is fine if it's a total shed put base and almost disposable but to buy one at a couple of grand that you hope to run for a few years but that has corrosion issues highlighted, you're a braver man than me as that reeks of a poor example... even if it's shiny on the outside and the spec you desire. Given the faff with the seller and MOT already, I'd be taking that one off the table but it's your money, your choice at the end of the day but you were warned! Tread carefully, they bite.

Absolute crap. I have a 16 year old 200k V70. It’s passed the last 3 Mots with minor advisories. The only additional spends I’ve had in my 4 years of ownership are a split diesel filter housing and a turbo pipe. It’s the cheapest car to run I’ve ever had.

They are no different to any other car of that age - find a good one and it’ll be a peach, but there are obviously neglected examples out there too.

I think that’s a good call. Keep looking, there’s some cracking V70s out there for not a lot of money.

First one looks better to me. Lower miles, long ownership, but both look decent.

Both look ok. Obviously check the mot history on line as that will give you a good insight.
Have you considered a manual. Volvo autos of that vintage are not known for being bombproof. A manual could be a safer long term car. Failing that, you’ll be needing a good 30 minute test drive to get the box warmed up and make sure the changes are smooth, no banging into gear or flaring.

Nicely done! Out of internet have you done any preventative work on the box like a fluid change?

OP, might be worth a read

Never had a fluid change. The whole car has only ever had routine maintenance.

I'm a bit reluctant to do anything to it now in case it causes a fail!

Needs a service though, the service light has been on for the last 300 miles or so.

Likewise. Light came on about two weeks ago smile I shall treat it to some Shell Helix oil, an air filter and maybe a fuel filter and then crack on. It feels totally dependable.

So the Volvo I was looking at has had its MOT done only a few advisories

For a car of that age, that’s not too shabby. Budget for a pair of springs, a pair of tyres and maybe tracking and it seems to be a decent one.

I’ve found a local Diesel one which I suspect would be slightly easier to sell:
