I have a 2015 V60 D4 with stop/start.

Recently noticed that it no longer does it's thing. Just doesn't ever work.

Not sure when this happened, it could have been ages ago.

The button to turn it off on the dash still lights up to say it's switched on but it definitely doesn't activate when I stop the car.

Any ideas on why it's stopped working or how to fix it gratefully received.

Charge the battery up overnight & see if it does it then.

Batteries are less efficient in cold temperatures & if the battery isn't 100% it won't use stop/start.

Cheers.

Just also read that the car has a "secret" back up battery for the stop start hidden under the bulkhead plastic cover which might need replacing.

But also just saw a YouTube video from a guy claiming that you should turn off the stop/start function every time you get in the car. His assertion is that all the stopping and starting means premature wear on the engine (due to oil draining back into the sump), starter motor and ring gear. He also claimed that any fuel saved will be minimal and that it's only really there to reduce emissions in cities rather than improved fuel efficiency.

Must admit I hadn't noticed any significant deterioration in fuel economy since the stop start ceased working. Maybe I won't bother trying to fix it as the little stop/start battery costs £150 to buy even if I fit it myself. So I'd need to drive 2,000 miles to get the cost of the battery back if it improved my fuel economy mpg by 1/2 mile mpg.

Any thoughts on this?

I didn't even know there was a second back-up battery.

We turn the S/S off in our P3 V70 each time we start the car. I consider it a pointless feature, it’s a shame it doesn’t stay turned off each time you get in the car.

Agreed, now I've read more about it.

Mine does stay turned off because it's broken so I won't bother fixing it!

Not fixing stuff fits right in with my skill levels too. Result!!

A little bit of confusion around the batteries - the big one in the engine bay does the starting(and the stop-starting) and the little one under the windscreen keeps things ticking over while at rest. If it's still on it's original battery it is probably getting tired now so below par which is measured by a battery condition piece of electronics, this might be gradual deterioration or because you are not doing enough decent runs to fully charge it. If you do use an external charger make sure you connect to the body side of the negative terminal rather than direct to the battery as the condition gubbins will get all confused.

I changed mine last year because of low battery warnings and a recurring car alarm going off at silly times regardless of whether the thing was locked - it has to be the AGM type of battery which retail at well over £200 each but you can normally get a massive discount from Eurocarparts, GSF etc. I actually got mine from Amazon for about £150 which made the delivery guy grunt a bit is its a big beast. Changing was straightforward as the little battery keeps everything alive(2014 model V60 D4 5pot)

This is the one I installed and everything has been back to normal ever since -
Bosch S5A08 - car battery - 70A/h - 760A - AGM technology - adapted for vehicles with Start/Stop system - Type 096

As above. Change the main battery and reset the battery calibration and all will be well.

I bought a 2015 S80 last year with the original battery in it, S/S stopped working, the battery was tired out.
New one in everything working as it should be now.
There is a load of rubbish one hears about S/S effecting starter motors, not saving you any money etc....Well I had a 1.6 diesel Mini i used to teach driving in around Southampton and that car covered 193k miles, and never once had any issues with starter motor or anything else, and believe me, a learner car starts and stops more than the "average" car does a day than Mr average does in a couple of weeks.
I suspect it used to also save me about £5-10 a week in fuel, which over a year is a shed load of money.
The only time i would turn it off is if I was in a stop/start traffic jam where you are stationary for less than about 10 seconds as the constant restart of the engine was irritating and more than likely using more fuel.
However looking at the stop/start issue another way if you get held up at one set of traffic lights on the way to work for 1.5 to 2 mins, then get caught on the way home that 's say 4 mins a day, 5 times a week so 20 mins with an engine idling, you are wasting fuel!
For OP i suspect the battery is tired and old, and with the cold winter we are having not charging enough for the S/S to work
