Gearbox trouble....
Not good news.... You said it was a brand new gearbox, but was it a standard, brand new gearbox or was it modded to cope with the extra torque?Greg_D said:
just found this, excellent build blog, ironically, the reason i am looking on the PH volvo forum is because my gearbox is acting up. I spot an achilles heel.
Good luck with the box, i hope it all ends well

Many thanks its been alot of work it seems the internet guessing games that go on with the gearbox strength is wrong as usual unless i have been very unlucky time will tell do you have a Volvo ???

i have a v70 2.4t! there is a bit of 'shunt' when going from r to d. there just seems to be a bit of slack in the system and it shunts around a bit much for my liking. i am going to get the fluid changed before panicking too much.
you've gotta love the internet experts haven't you, i got it all the time with an mx5 of mine that ran pretty decent power (for an mx5! - 250hp) the box is fine, the diff is fine the engine is fine they all preached whilst bowing down to the invisible deity that is accepted wisdom. I begged to differ! engine went (twice) box went, as did the diff.
It's just lucky that mx5 bits cost peanuts to change (a new engine is between £250-400, less for the diff and box)

Feedback,
i went to the garage today to get my mot and the mechanic went straight to my top engine mount (he's a volvo fan) and it was split to fook, he left the bonnet up, and cycled the box from r to d and i could see the mount clonking, so hopefully that is the problem.
Cost - £0.00
it is an easy 5 min bolt off/bolt on repair
What a legend!!!

Too true i had the same 'Experts' say you cannot do this and that,i gave up long long ago listening to them i choose to take all my advise from a great friend and is also someone who builds high hp cars every day not some one who think they can...i got it all the time with an mx5 of mine that ran pretty decent power (for an mx5! - 250hp) the box is fine, the diff is fine the engine is fine they all preached whilst bowing down to the invisible deity that is accepted wisdom. Reading your reply i see you have sorted your problem it would be worth checking and or changing your gearbox oil (only use the proper volvo stuff)

This car is long - gone I'm afraid. Last seen on eBay for 12k a year or so ago if memory serves.
I'm currently running a 310bhp v70, this is about as much as I'm prepared to risk for the sake of reliability.
Reaching 400bhp will be expensive and fraught with reliability issues (head bolts, crank, gear box, drive shafts etc).
If you're really looking for 500bhp, get on the forums and look for Tim Williams or shem green. They know their stuff.

Currently running 300hp in my 1999 v70 t5.
I have a spare b5234t3 motor that will be going forged big turbo and then drop in my v70.
Sent Shem an email an hour ago so will wait to hear back in the morning.
Was after more info with regards to the ecu/mapping with it being the cr@ppy me7 ecu or wether i just go standalone ecu.
Thanks

Me7 will probably cope - I've seen a few around 350-400bhp but the hardware is the big limiting factor. Stretched head bolts being a popular problem.
Spoke with both Shem and Tim today. Tim strongly advised doing the build on a pre me7 due to the etm and fixed fuel pressure. To aid with minimal lag also recommended boring to 2521cc from the 2319cc.
Appreciate the help.
Thanks
