Hmmm... what's the mileage and how much?
It's up on here for £3095. 125k.

I've decided to keep it if I can't get that for it though +-£5.00 - I reall can't, and don't want to, sell it for less.

The starting up thing, it was -5 overnight a couple of days ago. I tipped a kettle full of hot water over the top of the engine, waited for plug light to go out and it started after a couple of turns. No problems at all starting today - it's warmed up a bit.

That would suggest to me it's possibly a faling glo-plug rather than an injector.

Anyone got an eejits guide on testing the plugs? Can you get this symptom if just one fails as I'd rather not have to get 5....if any, it works fine in anything above freezing.
Have you got a link to the ad? I'm going to be looking at buying something in the next month or so.

Let me know asap though as if I don't get any interest in the next couple of weeks I'm withdrawing it from sale and then keeping it until it turns to dust. Best car I've ever had.

I have sourced a replacement wing mirror cover too and possibly a new heated seat control box which may fix the drivers seat not heating, just need to finalise it with the chap I've found who has them.

Hi all, been reading through this thread and maybe tomorrow picking up a 2.0T 2004 '04 - I know this section is for D5 owners but I guess the car itself is very similar.

Does anyone have any experience with the Petrol turbo ones? It's had the Polestar Map put on it, has the Dolby stereo, basically everything apart from Nav... I'm changing from an E39 528i Sport (after the fuel consumption and something newer) but have only owned a pretty dull S40 T4 in the past...

Yes, I used to have one and it was a very good car.

Good points:

  • Awesome stereo
  • Fantastically comfy seats with great heaters.
  • Fantastic heaters. You could boil an egg with them or freeze a can of coke in the cabin with the air con function, seriously good stuff especially with dual zone climate controls.
  • Light over the rear seat was a nice touch if you were parked with passengers in the back.
  • Lovely engine, combined with a well judged gearbox meant it felt just as at home on the B roads as it did on the motorways. A seriously good drive.
  • Ride is pretty good given that it's fairly stiff, though it corners very well for a big FWD car. The handling is very impressive on B roads, and it's not at all unsettled by crap tarmac.
  • Lovely engine noise, getting it up towards the redline gives a lovely offbeat burble courtesy of the 5 cylinder engine.
  • Great second gear. Can go from a tickover creep to NSL, it's very flexible and you'll spend a lot of time there if you're looking to punch and make progress.

Bad points:

  • Electronic Throttle Modules are a bugbear. Mine went after three days of owning the car. Replaced FOC by the dealer, but shouldn't be massively expensive if you have to get it replaced. I'd worry more about it with the car being remapped.
  • Not much room for passengers in the back if you're a tall driver, balanced out by having a cavernous boot.
  • Gear shift can feel a little inaccurate and clunky, especially 2nd to 3rd.
  • Pulling away from a stop is not it's strong point, first gear is pretty short and the wheels can scrabble and bog down in the wet. Switching off the traction control can help with this. Once you're in second gear you're away though.
  • Drive by wire throttle is soft and a bit laggy. You'll have to get used to making your inputs miliseconds before they happen. Rev matching downshifts is easy though, when you adadpt your technique (I double declutch all mine). On the plus side, the clutch is soft and forgiving and it makes it a nice one to drive through town.

Things to note:

  • The power steering is pretty good, though the wheel feels very 'light' compared to what you might be expecting. Steering 'feel' isn't tremendous, but weights up nicely in corners and the car is blessed with bags of grip so you can drive them very quickly with confidence.
  • They are known for being heavy on front end suspension components, so keep an eye on these.

Overall, a really good car and one I enjoyed owning. Had I bought a T5 model I may well have still had it now!

Thought i'd do a quick write up of my ownership over the last 18 or so months of S60 D5 ownership for anyone thats interested.

Mines a 2005 D5(163bhp) which I think must be towards the end of the Euro III engines. Bought for £4750 in August 2010 it had 100,500 miles on the clock. The previous owner had bought it at about 9 months old from the original owner. At the time of buying it had been serviced at c. 97,000 miles and had a recent (84k) cambelt change. It has the uprated stereo and winter pack. Its now got about 132,500 miles on it and the maintenance costs so far have been:

February 2011 - 109,500 miles - Minor service and a couple of bulbs at local indi - £175
April 2011 - 113,000 miles - MOT and front disc and pads - £254
August 2011 - 122,000 miles - Major service and brake fluid change - £267

Apart from that its had a couple of headlamp bulbs and thats about it! Its coming up for a service and will need 4 new tyres soon. Pretty impressed with tyre useage seeing as they are supposed to eat front tyres. I use it as a motorway grunt and it does the job perfectly including a couple of trips up to Scotland from the South.

OBC is showing 51.5mpg since the time of purchase which is probably a bit optimistic but not a million miles off, regularly get 800 miles plus between fill ups.

Thats about all I have to report. Got a small niggly problem with stereo backlight and steering wheel volume controls now working which I need to get sorted out but apart from that its been pretty much faultless.

Never going to set the world alight but for an effortless comfortable mileage muncher its been great. No idea what its worth now so can't really say what depreciation has been but no intention on selling so doesnt really matter.

Seen below in slightly cleaner times:

I thought I would give an update on servicing/running costs for anyone that is interested: S60 has now got about 136,000 miles on it and the maintenance costs since 100,500/August 2010 so far have been:

February 2011 - 109,500 miles - Minor service and a couple of bulbs at local indi - £175
April 2011 - 113,000 miles - MOT and front discs and pads - £254
August 2011 - 122,000 miles - Major service and brake fluid change - £267
March 2012 - 134,000 miles - 4x tyres (Kumho KU39 XL) - £335
March 2012 - 134,300 - Minor service and MOT (no advisories) - £200

On a recent run into Europe (last week), my OBC average clicked over the 60 mpg mark for the first time, although I've no idea over what period of miles or time it calculates the average from. It's on drugs anyway, so I only use it as a means of comparing driving styles.

However, following a bit of a discussion with y2blade on his S60 thread regarding driving styles, I've managed to get some reasonably decent returns on the latest few tank fills: 46-48 mpg has been recorded (calculated, not OBC), although it does mean staying off the power as much as possible. Overall long term average MPG is now creeping up to the 42 mpg mark, although of course it's skewed somewhat by the previous 15 months of only getting around 40 mpg per tank.

In terms of running costs, the first year/25,000 miles of mine cost me £2,300 (inc two windscreens, 2 sets of tyres, hire car costs when it broke down). However, since its last service in December, it's cost nothing, which is nice. I'm due another set of tyres, another service, the second cam belt change is looming, so I'm expecting an expensive few months ahead. Current mileage is 178,000, and it runs perfectly, if the handling is now somewhat soggy.

Got a 163bhp D5 Sport with some additional goodies - 18" pegs and R brake kit. It's a 54-reg/January 2005 car. Bought it September 2011 with 88K on the clock - now has 111K, as of June 2012.

I'm generally doing 150-200 mile return journeys to each job (I'm a photographer), mainly on motorways. Got an average of 61.4mpg yesterday there and back from Rugby to Outtibridge at the top of Sheffield. Not going mad up the M1, just sticking it in cruise at 75mph an doing the odd bit of overtaking on hilly bits when the lorries started to crawl up the inside lane. I don't totally trust the mpg counter but to be fair, when I did a fill-to-fill calculation once, it worked out at 55mpg doing the same kind of journeys. Round town I'd say 40mpg is about right, but then again I usually take the misses' Seat Arosa for shopping runs because it's smaller (for parking).

I'd say mainly though, 52-54mpg is about right, especially when there's a bit of stop/start traffic involved. 50mph road works help get the mpg upwards of 60 but it takes ages to get anywhere :ha:

Cost so far are:

2x budgety front tyres (Kormoran 225/40/18) for £190
Service at about 105K - £200
A quick check of the lighting electrics by a local mechanic - free, as he knows I'll be back because it's next door to work smile

I reckon the clutch is starting to go, as there's a bit of a lag off the lights and there's more of a vibration than before when it's idling. But I knew there'd be some form of major work to be undertaken this year at some pint, especially with a fair few miles being put on it.

So far though, I love the car. It gets me and the family everywhere, gets me and my camera kit around the UK and down all sorts of tracks and bumpy lanes, plus it's pretty good (for a solon) at fitting all my fishing gear in. I reckon I'll move over to a V70 D5 at some point, probably in 2013, but so far the S60 has been a worthy replacement to my Cupra R 225.

Have I read that correctly? In 25k miles you have replaced two full sets of tyres and need another?! That's some pretty serious tyre wear!

Yes, and no. Strictly speaking, yes, in 25,000 miles I purchased two sets of tyres. I've just replaced the second set (well, the fronts at least), but have done 33,000 in that time.

Fronts are doing about 20,000, mostly motorway miles, although I will admit to being a little enthusiastic when it comes to corners.

I'll give you a breakdown of the mileage and tyre wear, there are extenuating circumstances surrounding the first set.

146,000 - Bought car, it was fitted with a mismatched set of Chinese ditchfinders
150,200 - Fitted set of Bridgestone RX 050A tyres (soft, grippy, but disappointingly noisy).
152,800 - Had a 4 wheel alignment carried out, as the shoulders on the new tyres had all but worn out. The alignment transformed the car, made it much smoother and composed.

Shortly after this, I rotated the tyres, and put the badly worn fronts on the rear.

158,500 - Replaced front tyres, fitted Falken ZE-912's. So, in less than 8,000 miles, the fronts had worn out. The majority of the damage/wear was done in the first 2,600 miles before I realised the tracking was miles out.
164,500 - Replaced both rears. Falkens again. For the record, I like the Falkens, they deliver a good blend of grip and wear properties, not to mention, they're reasonably quiet. They're not as grippy as the Bridgestones, but are fine once they're bedded in and there's a little heat in them.
179,130 - Replaced the fronts with another set of Falkens, so they've lasted 20,600 miles.
The rears look as though they're almost done, they seem to wear almost as quickly as the front, but I should get another 3-4,000 out of them.

20,000 for a set of tyres isn't too bad, although as said, by far the majority of my mileage is on the motorway. By comparison, my brother-in-law has just managed 70,000 out of a set of rear tyres on his Alfa Giulietta.

I reckon I'll be lucky to get 10,000 out of my front tyres that I bought in October last year. They're winter tyres though and they seem to be getting quite scrubbed up in this warmer weather.

I'm getting much lower wear than everyone else seems to be!

I bought mine with 100,500 miles on and at the time it had 2x Kuhmo Ecsta Sp XL's on the front, one on the rear and a mismatched Michelin on the rear. At that time the fronts were quite heavily worn. After a few thousand miles I switched the fronts and rears around. I changed the full set at around 134,500 for a full set of Kuhmo's (as above) - so by my reckoning I got around 30k out of a set of nearly worn tyres on the rear and the same out of a set of lightly worn tyres on the front - expect to get between 30k and 40k out of the fronts this time round. 4k done and they are not showing any visible reduction in tread.

Mostly motorway driving but even so pretty good I thought.

at 240,000 miles, on 2005 plate, i replaced the d5 with another d5,(same engine) but newer model, 2008 , facelift with indicators in door mirrors, volvo badge on back looks different font, i dont have this satnav i had on the old one where you pressed a button located near the speedo, and i could hear it call up a call centre, and some woman asking me where i want to go, then a voice would appear from nowhere telling me to go left or right and tell me the destination time and traffic report. - anyone know what its called? and can you retro fit it?

£10k for 20,000 miles , feels quicker than the old one
the old one with 240k miles on the clock was using original turbo/gearbox, and passengers and people who saw the car were all shocked when i told them the mileage, the 6cd changer was jammed though , and had this display in the box come up near the dials saying transmission service required' i could sense the gearbox on last legs (auto )

I've noticed a slight change with my V70 D5, and wondered if anyone else has experienced it, or has any idea what may have caused it:

In short, the car has always been governed/rev limited to 4,500 rpm throughout the 19 or so months I've owned it. It was serviced about 3 weeks ago, not that a service may have much to do with anything, but on Saturday I noticed it was no longer limited to 4,500 (during a 3rd gear overtake).

I had a little play this morning, and it seems to be able to get pretty close to 5,000 rpm now, although I've yet to hit the limit (mechanical sympathy gets the better of me).

Is this normal? I'm wondering if the 4,500 limit was something the ecu imposes if it detects something not quite to spec (perhaps with the oil, or filters).
