How would you owners feel about a 2 owner, 03 car with a shade under 100k on the clock? I guess the timing belt should have been done. What other jobs might be pending on a car of this age/mileage?

Would a car with a tow hitch worry you?
I wouldnt bother with it unless it came with reciepts to show it had new DIM fitted sanf new injectors ,2 mega expensive problems for car of that age/ year model.Service history is a must.DMF also a big issue.I have a 2003 D5 and spent alot of cash sorting all 3 main issues out.Go for 2004 onwards ,upgraded DIM and filters to protect injectors.2005 onwards is the 185bhp.

I picked this up last week for £3150, came serviced with a new cambelt and 12 months MoT. Its an S spec but comes with the 4 disc changer and leather, only thing its missing is ACC but its no biggy.

Very impressed so far I've come from a Saab 9000 so it was difficult to find anything as comfortable! I managed 620 miles from a tank without the light coming on, averaging 44.4mpg by my own calculations, no trip computer to work it out for me but by the sounds of things they're fairly inaccurate anyway!

I picked mine up at the weekend as well (sorry about the poor photo!). Stereo is just amazing, especially in pro logic mode. I've bought a USA-Spec adaptor as well to plug in my iPod.

It drives very nicely and is rattle free even at 175k miles. Very happy with it smile Especially when I saw this after a (70mph) motorway journey:

Its always reassuring to see a car just like yours with nearly twice the mileage on it of mine! Can I ask what you paid for it?

Where did you get the ipod adapters from guys? Is it for the HU803 stereo?

Mine feels very solid, admittedly a lot of things have been replaced on it but I'm sure it will be good for at least another 100k miles. The engine pulls strongly and feels good.

I bought mine for trade price so I'll not say what I paid for it as it wouldn't be a realistic value to compare to a normal sale.

I got my iPod adaptor from eBay. It is for the HU803 stereo - it's a little box of tricks that pretends to be a CD changer. I've got the wire coming up through the cubby underneath the armrest so I plug the phone in there and it's out of the way. It sounds excellent - just make sure you have high quality MP3s as it will show up the poor ones!

The DIM can usually be fixed via a rebuild - going rate is about £100. Usually lasts longer than the Volvo replacement as well! As for injectors, it is rare that all 5 fail at once and need replacing. If poor starting is the issue usually replacing the worst or the worst two does the job - for a while anyway. Injectors cost about £100+VAT each if you shop around and are not hard to replace yourself if you want to save some cash.

Both these are very common problems but they're not quite the financial disaster they could be. Incidentally, injectors also fail and wear out on 2004 and 2005 models. This usually manifests its self as missing at idle and rough running rather than starting issues - again, it is usually just one or two injectors rather than all at once.

DMF, yes, expensive, but unfortunately that's common to most cars these days. frown

I love D5's - a great sound from a diesel is rare these days but it just begs to be revved.

Morning Gents, sorry to bring this one up again however I'm also now considering a diesel S60 having decided 1.9/2.0 Audi's just seem so over priced in comparison. My only previous experience with an S60 was a 1,200 mile round trip in an 06 D5 which was brilliant, hence I'm very very tempted to buy one.

Having done some research (and suitably confused myself in the process) I've decided that I would prfer a facelifted car with the colour coded bumper inserts and revised lights and I gatehr these started appearing in 2005?

However, as excellent as my previosu S60 driving experience was, it was also appear that the later Euro4 engines are worse on fuel than their earlier Euro3 counterparts and also are prone to costly DMF issues? These earlier Euro3 engines, I gatehr thay are still the 163bhp versions?

So ultimately, I'm searching for a circa 2005 facelifft car with the earlier Euro3 engine, however identifying such cars seems a bit of a task. I gather they have the black engine cover however is there any other way of telling the difference between a Euro3 and Euro4 powered vehicle and similary, how do I indentify the power outputs as the following....

2.4D (2001–2005): 96 kW (131 PS; 129 hp) , 280 N·m (210 lb·ft) , diesel, turbo
2.4D (2006–2009): 120 kW (163 PS; 161 hp) , 340 N·m (250 lb·ft) , diesel, turbo
D5 (2001–2005): 120 kW (163 PS; 161 hp) , 340 N·m (250 lb·ft) , diesel, turbo
D5 (2006–2009): 136 kW (185 PS; 182 hp) , 400 N·m (300 lb·ft) , diesel, turbo

... is very confusing!

Although this seems much clearer...

S60/V70/S80 to 2008 - 2.4D (163bhp) D5 (185bhp)
This is one such example which caught my eye, but again... 2004/54 model and facelifted however, how would I find out what powerplant this vehicle has?

Many thanks in advance

Apologies for twittering on, however also found the following advertised:

Volvo
2005 55 Volvo S60 D5, diesel, 6 speed manual, alloys, electric seats, air, Pro Logic CD sound system,
Full leather interior, heated front seats, 6 months tax, GREAT ECONOMY CAR 45 MPG

So, would I be correct in saying that this car on 55 plate (2005) badged as a D5, would therefore have the 163bhp Euro3 engine?

The 163 D5 will have a 5-speed gearbox, that one is a 6-speed so therefore a 185.

No, there are 54-plate facelift 163 D5s in existence so I think they came out in the second half of 2004.

The one in your first link will have the Euro III engine - the second one you posted will have the Euro IV.

All cars after 2005 had a Euro IV engine - the D5 first with 185bhp, and then the 2.4D was introduced in 2006 which had 163bhp.

I think. wobble

Deary me, this is confusing...

Do the later Euro4 cars all have 6 speed boxes and the earlier Euro3 have 5 speed or have I picked that up wrong.

Basically, I'm after a facelifted car with the 163bhp Euro3 engine... so I should be looking for something on say a 54/05 plate as prior to this there were the "older" body design and after this, they went to the later generation Euro4 engines.

There should be Open University courses on this subject...

Davie,

Very simple pal.

Mid 2004 onwards D5 is 185 (Euro 4)
2.4D is the 163bhp from this date, although not sure exactly when they came out.

What your looking for doesnt exist. You need to look for a 2.4D.

HTH.

Unfortunately not, no!

I'm probably having a blonde day or perhaps just totally missing the point or the is actually rocket science... or all three, but I've just been on Autotrader and narrowed my search down by opting for diesel and manual with a £4000 limit and every single car regardless of age and spec, is listed in their titles as a D5!

I was under the illusion that the D5 engine was only introduced circa 2005 (ish) on the facelifted cars, complete with DMF and the 185bhp thus all pre-facelift cars were either the 130bhp or 163bhp Euro3 powerplants, however around the 54/05 age it was possible to get a facelifted car but still with the older Euro3 engine?

What does "D5" actually mean when it comes to engines... ie, what is the difference between a 163bhp 2.4D and a 163bhp D5?

Now I'm suitably confused and have no idea what I'm looking for. At this rate... a bloody Audi I think!

Cheers

This one...

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...

...has caught my eye (don't care much for the wheels) but can somebody please help me identify what it is because I'm now lost in a world of confusion! It's badged on its arse as a D5, but will this be the Euro4 engine with the DMF, 185bh and the poorer fuel economy or the one I'm after, ie a facelift with the Euro3 163bhp engine?

Edit: The vehicle stats say 163bhp and the title says 2.4D...
