Box is a bit budget compared with the older stuff, but the three manuals make up for it. there aren't *too* many specific parts, in fact a lot less than I thought there would be:
That's A1... I remember my boy opening that on xmas day and not for a single moment complaining that it 'wasn't a toy' - he just said 'Daddy can we build that tomorrow?'!Be prepared for buying a heap load of batteries!

Can you lubricate Lego gears effectvely? Obviously not mineral oil, but Silicone spray maybe?
Cheers!

This was the one I had
I had loads of fun with it.
Looking at some websites it seems they used to make kits where you could get 3 or 4 different models out of the one set called Universal Sets
I don't remember that one. I had a closer look at the old instruction manuals last night, and while there were only detailled plans for two or three models, there were pictures of several other models without details - that could be built with the set. The excavator has only two pictures, and you don't even get plans for the second, as someone else pointed out, yuo have to download them. Cost saving gone mad!I had loads of fun with it.

I've got that one waiting to be claimed from my parents loft next weekend - along with all my other childhood lego - plus a box full of transforers and MASK toys. ebay here I come!I had loads of fun with it.

well, just been to Argos to get my 3 excavators and one of the boxes is damaged which is a pain as it means I have to go back to get a replacement later.
also, I was planning to do as dr_gn and sell the others on but one of the kids thinks it would be fun to build 2 and then fight them robot wars style!

Sounds like an excellent idea! You'll need to change channels on the IR remote controls to do that. Have a play with them before you install and make sure they are not interfering with each other.
Glad I am not the only lego nerd here!
Would love to use our daughter as an excuse - maybe I can save them until she is a bit older! My enthusiasm also started with my dad and older brother, we used to love making powered cars that dad had extended the cabling for so we had to run behind after them

Mine's all mixed up with the other stuff at the moment after a marathon crane building session. This might be better for you:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E82ciYjbtNI
